walruses congregated on land are susceptible to additional human contact, whether a low-flying airplane or a hunter's boat Yes, they'd be safer floating on sea-ice. Then the boats and the planes wouldn't be able to come so close ...

Where did the Arctic Ice go, well NASA has been asking that question, and has scientists working on it. Yesterday they sent out a press release that solved the mystery.

It’s the wind, and yes it has done it before. Piled the ice up, blew it into warmer water and it melted.
I wouldn’t expect AP to know that ... after all, they just use DNC talking points as news these days.

"that could can panic the group, setting off a deadly stampede to the water."
It wouldn't be like the thousands of gnus that drowned in Africa, walrus can swim.

This should increase the polar bear population, easy hunting.

“Walruses on shore may be forced to swim farther to forage, expending more energy....”
Of course, they’ll not need so many calories to stay warm sitting on an ice-less beach. They may decide that they like this new twist to their lives and move south the next time the ice closes in.
