Never heard of him until the sheriff’s deputy told Sheriff Buford T. Justice “I don’t give a damn if your name’s Broderick Crawford.” in Smokey & The Bandit.
I catch 99% of all cultural references but I admit this was a total mystery to me until I did some research.

As chance would have it, I pulled up alongside Brodrick Crawford at a stoplight in Hollywood.
It was a clear twilight evening at Sunset and La Cienega and he had his window rolled down.
Our eyes met and I said "10-4".
He replied rather sternly, "Over and out."
That was in the Spring of 1974.
