Officials eye ban on smoky dwellings [your home is next]
Boston Globe ^ | September 28, 2007 | Stephen Smith

There are smoke-free offices, smoke-free bars, smoke-free malls. Could smoke-free apartment houses and condo towers be next?

Scattered apartment units across the state already ban smoking. But early next year, the Department of Public Health plans to survey landlords, condominium associations, and tenants about the feasibility of making smoke-free residential zones the norm, rather than the exception.

There could even be a state-run registry to connect tenants with landlords and condo boards that offer developments entirely devoid of smoke.

The state review emerges as an influential coalition of health and housing officials is issuing a sweeping call to make smoke-free housing standard across New England. The Asthma Regional Council will issue a report today saying that mounting evidence about the dangers of secondhand smoke, especially to children, provides the best argument for establishing rules that restrict smoking in buildings with multiple units.

If landlords find a demand for smoke free complexes, then they can write the leases with a smoking ban.

No need for the coercion of government on this, because a smoker doesn’t attack anyone with their smoking, unless he trespasses on their property with a significant level of smoke.

When it is 40 below and I am outdoors all day the world is kind of blurry. That is because I have to remove my glasses, which freeze over when I wear any kind of facemask and sometimes when I don’t. Also if the glasses haven’t frosted over they frost instantly when I enter a heated building such as a store, so that is blurry too. It’s a blurry time in the subarctic for some, but it doesn’t matter a lot since it is dark anyway.

If this is to "protect children", then there is absolutely nothing that stands between regulations for multi-unit dwellings and single-unit dwellings. And there is no reason for them to stop at just smoking. Hell, just wait until it is federalized.

To the guy who said that the camel is already in the house and taking a dump on the floor - I agree, and wager that the camel (branded with "The Common Good") will eventually copulate with our families and rape us in our sleep.

There could even be a state-run registry to connect tenants with landlords and condo boards that offer developments entirely devoid of smoke.

Then they will claim they don't have enough available units and they will push themselves on the free peoples property, then demand that it be made smoke free, too.
