Why Microsoft must abandon Vista to save itself
Cnet News ^ | September 26th | Don Reisinger

While Vista was originally touted by Microsoft as the operating system savior we've all been waiting for, it has turned out to be one of the biggest blunders in technology. With a host of issues that are inexcusable and features that are taken from the Mac OS X and Linux playbook, Microsoft has once again lost sight of what we really want.

As we're more than aware, Vista Ultimate comes at a premium. For an additional $160 over the Premium SKU price, Ultimate gives you a complete backup and restore option, BitLocker Drive encryption, the ever so popular Windows Fax & Scan, and the "Ultimate Extras." But what started with a promise of "Extras" by summer, quickly turned into an apology from Microsoft and the eventual release of DreamScene and Windows Hold 'Em (among others) today. And while each of the "Extras" runs just fine, Microsoft's "Extras" blunder is just another reason why the company must abandon Vista before it's too late.

>>features that are taken from the Mac OS X and Linux playbook<<

Why is this a reason to abandon Vista, if the alternative is either Mac or Linux?

BS meter alert here.

Vista’s running just fine in our office environment. XP’s still the choice for older boxes, though.

I do IT work for a couple of companies that are Mac-oriented and believe me, the ‘invulnerable Mac’ myth is just that.

I’m running vista ultimate and have had zero issues. Also, I back up my movies with no problems either. The only problems I know of other vista users were having are driver problems. But that is the hardware manufactures issues, not Microsoft. Regardless, they were all fixed.

After using SUSE 10.2 for several months and not being entirely pleased, I just installed Ubuntu 7.04 a couple of days ago. Wow! Very much ready for prime time. Everything I’ve tried so far works and updates actually install instead of leaving you with undigested files scattered all over your hard drive!

I do believe that the folks at Ubuntu have grasped that to most of us, “terminal” is a dirty word.

Oh, I know all that. Its just the article starts off with something that doesn’t make sense. If the author does that initially, should we really read the rest of the article?

Go to the article and keep reading. He goes into Vista’s DRM failings.

We’ve bought a few new Dell computers recently; a fast single core for my father-in-law, a dual core for a client, and another dual core for ourselves. We wiped Vista off of all three. The box for the client and the box for my FIL are both happily running WinXP Pro. Ours is running Kubuntu. From what we briefly experienced with Vista on all three and from what I read here and elsewhere, I’m sooooo glad we pulled Vista off of them. Vista crippled all three boxes. (And that was without getting the DRM software into the mix!) It would have been a nightmare trying to support Vista.

I'm sure it is. But I'm a long-time Windows user (since v.2) and I've never felt more spoiled on a computer system than when I'm on my iMac.

Or treats content that YOU generated as protected from YOU, despite the fact that you are the “rights owner”. The RIAA sucketh and Bill Gates bloweth.

Within three years M$ will be fighting to keep above 60% market share, unless they do something very remarkable in this next year.

Maybe less. Mark my words.

Just keep this name in mind...Canonical.

I had driver problems using Vista with... MS hardware! While its true those have been fixed I still have connectivity issues I never had with XP.

Can't definitely say they're due to Vista but I have my suspicions.

I’ve put XP on the boxes I’ve put together lately. Avoiding Vista like it was radioactive. I am not alone.
