It's time again for my quarterly "What Are You Reading Now?" thread!
It can be anything...a NY Times bestseller, a technical journal, a trashy pulp novel...in short, anything!
DO NOT answer by saying "I'm Reading This Thread". It stopped being funny a long time ago.
Here's what I'm reading. I'm just about finished with "Street Without Joy" by Bernard Fall. It's about France's war in Vietnam from 1946-1954. Very interesting and tragic.
So, tell me. What are you reading now?
The Perisan Puzzle, Author: Kenneth M. Pollack, The Pity Of It All, Author: Amos Elon, The Assasination Of Lumumba, Author: Ludo De Witte/Just Asking - seoul62........
I’m in a small group that is reading John as well. We’re in Chapter 7, and are averaging a chapter every 2 or 3 weeks . . . we are the tortoises of Bible study.
and...
Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, by Charles MacKay
Oooo! Is it any good? I absolutely luuuurve Pride and Prejudice! It’s my favourite Austen.
They fall into a category, along with Plato’s Republic, More’s Utopia, Bacon’s Utopia, Augustine’s City of God, and a truckload of novels from the Civil War to the present of utopic and dystopic novels. BNW and 1984, and Skinner’s work, appeared about the same time, as did Rand’s Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Add Asimov’s Foundation series. It’s a fascinating and very popular genre since it all seems somewhat plausible and prophetic yet is impossible in various ways.
I thought you might still be reading “Tropic of Cancer’.
LOL . . . good job! Freepers are so freaking intellectual!
Recently finished “The Reagan Diaries” and I highly recommend it.
“Poems of Rural Life in the Dorset Dialect” - William Barnes
The Vorkosigan novels are just so good. I’m forever rereading them when I’m between new books :)
We’ve been in John for about 1 1/2 years meeting once a week for an hour. We really try to exposit the scripture. It took us about 3 months to finish shapter 15!
BTTT!
That ... that was awesome. Thank you!
S
Studying Proverbs 27 and the book of Colossians.
Just finished a John Piper book and starting another John Piper book. How to Fight for Joy.
So far, Mr D takes a wife is good, written in the Austen style, expands on characters (some brilliant, some not so) I would recommend it for any Austenphyle
“The Last Romantic” (the life of Marie, Queen of Romania) and
“Raging Heart” about the life and marriage of O.J. Simpson and Nicole Simpson.
I thought we were slow; three months to cover one chapter, now that's impressive!
John 15 has one of my favorite lines of scripture:
I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
Might be impossible in some ways over here, but it’s coming to light in Europe.
Sorry to hear that. I actually just finished it and I loved it. I thought the first 20 pages or so were a bit uneven but after that I sailed right through it.
What did you not like about it?
