Doctor: Chris Benoit Had Brain Damage That May Have Led to Killings

ATLANTA (AP) -- A doctor who examined brain matter from former pro wrestler Chris Benoit is saying the wrestler had brain damage from multiple concussions that was consistent with what's seen in Alzheimer's patients.

Doctors say the damage from years in the ring may have been a leading cause for Benoit killing his wife, children and himself at their Atlanta-area home in June.

The Sports Legacy Institute, an organization that advances health and wellness of athletes, coordinated the testing using samples of Benoit's brain tissue provided by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, with the permission of Benoit's father.

Alzheimers causes days of murders and then a suicide?
Don’t know about that one.

I wondered if this had something to do with it...along with the drugs...

Thanks for posting.

If he says that too much caffeine caused his problems, then he can probably pull up a statistical link that shows it.

We’ve found the cause - his brain was like a 30 day old banana pickled in Steroids.

In other news, Chris Benoit fans may have severe brain damage, which explains why they posted tributes to this childmurdering dirtbag before they were zotted.

Let’s go at this rationally.

If this was a problem of pro wrestling, then more wrestlers than this guy would have experienced the problem.

Where is the string of murders and suicides associated with this new diagnosis?

This just doesn’t fly IMO.

Flying headbutts are not a good thing for one’s noggin. Neither are chair shots, body slams and suplexes gone bad or being tossed over the top rope.

it's probably a huge stretch to say the cuncussions had much to do with anything

But one of Chris'es favorite moves were those damned flying headbutts. That'll show he's REALLY getting to the core of the problem!!!!

This is nothing new. With Boxers it’s ofter referred to being “punch drunk”, and I believe the medical term is pugilista dementia. I’ve never heard of the condition causing multiple murder and suicide.

There have been several suicides in the past few years since the start of the "Extreme" chair shot generation of wrestlers.

The post concussion syndrome leads to depression, which leads to drug and alcohol troubles....and it keeps compounding.

Along with those suicides there have been many overdoses....A lot of heart related deaths from the drugs....The science may be on to something.

“Doctors say the damage from years in the ring may have been a leading cause for Benoit killing his wife, children and himself”...

The damage Muhammad Ali suffered in the ring was far worse and he didnt murder anyone.
Its BS.

Okay. Then perhaps they are. I don’t follow wrestling at all. I wasn’t aware that they had a number of deaths associated with the sport. Thanks for the response.

The link between repeated traumas to the brain and violent behavoir is a fairly new concept. I recall a case involving a former NFL player who went on a crime binge, he was in his 30’s but his brain looked like it belonged to someone in their 70’s suffering from dementia.

Who knows...maybe if more of the geezers with Alzheimers had the testosterone levels and muscle mass of younger men...younger men who are perhaps taking in large amounts of exegenous testosterone...you’d see more “Grandpa got a rifle and he went to the mall” stories
