The Lost John mummy... [f]ound in 1935... a male approximately 45 years old and about 5' 3"... about the fourth century B.C.E... Little Alice has waited about 4,000 years to be seen. The Little Alice mummy is something of an enigma for more than just her place in time. She is small, barely three and a half feet tall when alive... later study indicated that it may have been a boy child of about nine... found over 9,000 feet below the earth and the artifacts found with the body, while unidentified by culture, showed the craft and workmanship of an intelligent and civilized race. Scudder's Mummy presents another strange mystery out of place in time. The dark, redheaded person had clear skin and good teeth. It had been wrapped in deer skin and buried under nine feet of earth in one of the cave passages. The enigma is in that the clothing the mummy wore is of a type that was found in the ancient cultures of the Figi and Sandwich islands. And most unusual of all is the finding of what is called the Fawn Hoof Mummy. This enigmatic body was found in a small crypt roofed over with a large stone slab deep under one of the cavern passages... in a sitting position inside two decorated deer skin was shrouded in a large woven sheet. While the hair was cut short on the mummy's head, it was of a woman, almost six feet tall in life. Her teeth and nails were in perfect condition. Her skin was dark though not black and she wore a color makeup on her lips... The Smithsonian Institution lost her body after dissecting it in the late 1800's.

DISCOVERIES IN KENTUCKY CAVES

In Edmonson and Hart counties the writer has investigated three of the most wonderful of these caves, all in close proximity to each other, the entrances of which could be covered by an equilateral triangle measuring hardly more than three miles. These are Mammoth Cave, of world-wide reputation; Colossal Cavern, but recently discovered and noted for its magnificence, and Salts Cave, from which have been taken some of the most remarkable prehistoric textile fabrics and vegetable remains ever brought to light. Several other caves in this vicinity have also yielded relics of rare interest to the archeologist. In Short Cave, eight miles from Mammoth Cave, was found the so-called American Mummy, exhibited many years ago at Mammoth Cave and now deposited in the National Museum at Washington.

(I wonder if it's still there...?)

The Mammoth Cave and other caves in the vicinity were explored for the purpose of securing saltpeter during the War of 1812

Natural preservative available on site.

The Smithsonian Institution lost her body after dissecting it in the late 1800's.

So, how does a prestigious institution "lose" a body? I'll bet it "found" its way into a private collection, for a consideration.

There’s a story about the Smithsonian towing a bargeload of inconvenient artifacts out into the Atlantic and dumping it, early 20th century.

There was something about that artifact dump in “Forbidden History”. Very interesting. I wonder if they have a log of what was dumped?
