Most pit bulls I’ve seen were *very* hostile, except to the ONE person they identified as their owner.

Oh please....disliking a breed of dog known to be particularly deadly doesn't make anyone a "dog hater".

It’s the breed of peace. They’re just misunderstood, and that’s what leads them to maul people.

If people didn’t hate pit bulls, they wouldn’t have to resort to mauling.

“We’re getting all kinds of negative national publicity (for pit bulls),” Chille, SPCA executive director, said.

As you should. I hope you get even more.

Sorry. This breed needs to be eliminated. One grows tired of reading about random unprovoked maulings of innocent people by this “breed of peace.”

According to my Little Oxford Dictionary:

notorious a. well-known esp. for unfavorable

reason

Yep, I’d say notorious is the correct word.

Homicidal pit bulls? Nah, the endless (and I do mean endless) news stories of deadly pit bulls are all just simple misunderstandings, I am sure.

Dog Warden Chille said people should be careful around any breed of dog, not only those perceived as dangerous.
“The bottom line is the fact that like most dogs, if Pit Bulls are purchased as small pups and raised in a loving atmosphere, they turn out to be really nice dogs,” Chille said.

Yes, but the dogcatcher is leaving out an unfortunate history of the breed's involvement in many more attacks and injuries in the past few decades that is out of all proportion to their numbers. Any homeowner's insurance underwriter can tell you that, or ER staff, or PD. We ought to get rid of the emotion here on the site and concentrate on the "why." With the progress being made in genetics, perhaps some could be applied to this problem. We know a lot of animal behavior is genetic ... end of story. How we're going to apply the knowledge is the beginning of another.

I own a small pitbull mix, 18#, under knee high, black with white chest and feet, curly tail, definite pit bull head and ears. The vet and I think maybe something small and a lot of Beagle. He's eventually become a lot less aggressive, calm (and a lot smarter) than my Jack Russells were, not to mention being one hell of a natural rabbit dog! He naturally springs in and out of cover and can somehow drive rabbits.

I say "eventually," because no doubt about it, even as a pup, this little character was extremely aggressive and needed a lot more domestication than is usual. Got him at 4-5 months from the dog pound. Neutering helped. At two, he's a warm, fairly quiet, and very friendly pet. However, I wouldn't feel OK with leaving him alone with little kids. Good with them when I'm there.

(New to the site. When I figure out how, I'll post a picture on a pit bull thread.)

Pit bulls were bred for one purpose - to kill. It has taken generations of breeding to get these dogs to this point.
They are and always will be killers instinctively. Sorry pit bulls loves those are the facts. It is not the fault of the dog, its those who wanted them to be such.
Even if you find what appears to be a calm and gentle dog, they can not be trusted, ever.
It will take generations to breed the killer out of them.
Anyone who has a pit bull is taking a huge risk, especially if there are children. These dogs are not stupid, it is the small and weak they attach first.

By merely stating that pitbulls are not notorious diminishes your credibility. Don’t you know what “notorious” means?

This from wfaa.com news site for Dallas/FtWorth:

DALLAS — A new Texas law went into effect at midnight Friday that could put dog owners behind bars for up to 20 years if their pet fatally attacks someone.

Just hours before earlier, a six-year-old Dallas boy was mauled to death by his family's dog.

The mother of Scott Warren said the family had had the pit bull since Scott was a baby.

Kressie Warren said Friday's attack was the first time the dog had snapped at anyone.

Guess you haven’t seen the video on Drudge where the pits, dog of piece, are attacking the woman.

At the Pittsburgh humane society, they have a LOT of pit bulls up for adoption. I wouldn’t mind a pit bull mix, but I just wouldn’t feel comfortable with a purebred, unless I could get one as a pup.

Pitbulls most certainly ARE notorious. You might mean to say that such a reputation is undeserved, but the reputation itself is undeniable.

Well, here's some more for you. This fatal attack happened only two days ago.
