Public Wedding Proposal Flops at Astros Game Flops Big Time

By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ

It was not a good idea to make assumptions Monday night at Minute Maid Park, where the Astros got the figurative equivalent of popcorn thrown in their faces, which is what one fan suffered when he tried to propose marriage before tens of thousands of strangers.

Former prized prospect Tim Redding, one of the Astros' biggest flops this decade, was on the mound for the Washington Nationals. And surely there was reason for optimism for those who remembered Redding's struggles in Houston.

Redding has never lived up to the Roy Oswalt comparisons he carried to the majors in 2001, but he was good enough to throw seven scoreless innings to beat Jason Jennings and the Astros 7-0.

The Astros threatened often against Redding, but they couldn't get through for a run before a subdued crowd of 30,374. Although Jennings struggled, the Astros' offense wasn't impressive, going 0-for-8 with men in scoring position and stranding eight runners.

The biggest excitement happened in the stands when a fan failed in his public attempt at popping the question. With the couple highlighted on the big screen, the mood soured after the man took a knee to offer an engagement ring.

Wearing a brick-red replica Astros jersey, the woman appeared to angrily dump a bag of popcorn on the man before rushing up the stairs amid a chorus of boos. After the top of the sixth, the man left amid cheers from the sympathetic crowd.

"If it was an act, she put on a good one," manager Phil Garner said. "She looked totally surprised and then totally mad. We couldn't even get a proposal right down here tonight. "We lead the league in marriage proposals, and we couldn't get that one right tonight."

It was that type of night for the Astros.

Baseball is for beer, dogs, popcorn, and crackerjacks.... Not wedding proposals....

Perhaps choosing AC/DC’s “Shot Down In Flames” failed to set the right ambiance?!

Oh well. If she couldn't accept a marriage proposal in front of a baseball crowd, she was the wrong kind of woman for him. The humiliation was considerable but it saved him from a nasty divorce later down the road.

I feel really bad for the guy, but he really should not have made the proposal so public if he was not sure she would accept. Sometimes men are so dense. (I’m a woman.) I probably would have pretended to accept in public to keep him from being so embarrassed.

See, you're nice.

If *I* was a woman and I got a proposal on the big video board, if I didn't want the guy, I would have not only emphatically said no......

....... I would have held my fingers up to the camera really close together, as if to indicate, "Thiiiiiis tiny!"

MuhuhuhHUHAHAHAHAHAHH!!!!!

Sounds to me like the intended groom dodged a MAJOR bullet.

The only thing noteworthy is that garbage heap pitchers like Tim Redding can be superstars in the National League.

Yes, we women are just too nice for our own good sometimes. Men are so mean to each other. Yet when there is a crisis or a problem to be solved men can work together even if they don’t like each other. I have always envied that characteristic in men.

Why is everyone assuming that the guy dodged a bullet? We don’t know the whole story. She may have had a good reason for reacting with such horror. :-)
