CLEVELAND (AP) -- Talk about your pushy New Yorkers.
Strutting into Jacobs Field for the weekend, the Yankees made themselves right at home. They bullied the Cleveland Indians before leaving with three wins and the same confidence that has made them champions many times before.
"I feel like we're the team," Andy Pettitte said.
When weren't they?
Pettitte didn't have much trouble with Cleveland's lame lineup and Jason Giambi homered for the second straight day as the Yankees beat the Indians 5-3 to complete a series -- and season -- sweep on Sunday.
Written off in May when they trailed first-place Boston by 14 1/2 games, the Yankees pulled within four of the Red Sox, who lost 6-3 in 10 innings at Baltimore. It's the closest New York has been to the top of the AL East standings since April 24.

Been a Yankee Fan since 1946. They don’t start to play ball until mid August. Its their MO most of the time.
Me neither:
Guthrie v. Wang? Tight game.
Cabrera v. Karstens? O's
Bedard v. Hughes? O's and another notch for the Cy Young.
Nothing wrong with socialism in sports. Let everyone compete on an equal playing field.
Jeez, could the Giants borrow the Yankees offense for a series? A game? An inning? A couple of ABs?
There’s really something humbling about looking up at the NL West at 16 1/2 games out.
Bigger than in '78? How far ahead was Boston that year, it was about the same lead, wasn't it?
The comback in 1978 was 14 games; 2007 would be 14.5. Plus this year’s RS team supposedly has the “best pitching in baseball.”
YEA BABY! YANKS ARE ALIVE AGAIN THEIR ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another thread to save...
Yankees are ALWAYS alive - never count ‘em out...never...
14.5
Ahhh. Despite the comeback, do you think the Yanks have a chance to win it all again? I’m not sure if they have as good of a rotation as they’ve had back in the late 90s, do you think Wang is their best pitcher right now? Offense only takes a team so far in the postseason.
Just curious.
Go Yanks!
“everyone hates a winner.”
Not me! It ain’t ‘merkin!
Well count me in the die hard side. I have been a fan since the fourth grade, World Series, 1964. I went through a lot of lean years until George Steinbrenner bought them and made them winners again! And just to irritate the Steinbrenner haters out there, God Bless George Steinbrenner!!:)
I don't think Wang is their best pitcher (especially lately), but he's very solid. Pettitte has been steady as well, and we're heading into the time of year he usually shines. Clemens looked like the Rocket of old in his last appearance. The Hughes rookie is looking really good -- the future ace of the staff. And Mussina has been consistently very good this last couple months. And for relief the Yanks have the best closer in the history of the game (Rivera) and a rookie set-up man (Chamberlain) that throws 100mph heat and looks as unhittable as Gossage in the 70s.
So the Yanks are far from only offense.
Ain’t gonna happen and even if it did would not be devastating. Tigers almost blew a 14 game lead last year. In fact the Yankees had a 14 game lead on the Sox in 2003 and Boston got to within 2 games of the Yankees in September. Yanks will stay close and fade by mid-September. Their pitching still sucks.
You Red Sox fans are nothing if not amusing. Blowing a 14.5 game lead and then losing to the division to the Yanks wouldn't be devasting? lol....maybe if you keep repeating that ridiculous mantra enough you'll actually start to believe it.
The Yanks' 10th straight division title is in the bag. 1978, Part 2. .

Exactly how does that "in the bag" thing work?
Long live the Curse of the Hildebeast!!
