The Hobbit Hole XXXIV - But better than rain or rippling streams...

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:52:15 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

I don't think goldfish do as well in a small space as bettas do. Do not overfeed them, as this is one of the quickest was to kill them, by poisoning the water.

That's because bettas are able to breathe air, in addition to getting oxygen through their gills. So those little globes that kill goldfish are OK for bettas.

As I guess you know, the male bettas are very territorial, and make their displays for the same reason that male birds do, to drive off other males. They are often called Siamese Fighting Fish, because some folks used to pit them against each other, just as in cockfighting and dogfighting. I think that this sort of thing is legal, where fighting roosters or dogs isn't.

Speaking of Harry Potter, Luke came home with two library books today, one from the Magic Tree House series and The Order of the Phoenix...because it's worth 44 points.

We suggested that we go back and start with the first one and we'll read it with him.

Ah, OK. That makes sense! That's why they tend to hang out near the top of the bowl some of the time, no? He did that part of the day...almost out of the water.

He sure is pretty.

So, how are you about ‘The Golden Compass’ book and movie. Has anyone actually read it? From what I’ve been reading it is an abomination, and certainly NOT for children.

I just finished reading the trilogy, actually. Yeah, it's quite anti-Christian... anti-religious, really.

I know Jen said she’d read it, and found it very dark and disturbing. The anti-Christian elements were fairly subtle in the first book, but got stronger and stronger as the series went on.

Actually, when I was 11, the first book by my now-favorite author, Roger Zelazny, that I ever read was The Hand of Oberon, the fourth book in the original Amber series. I got it from the rather small SF/Fantasy section in our small town library.

A few months later, when I got to go to the nearest real bookstore (a B. Dalton's 100 miles away...) I bought every Zelazny paperback that looked like it might be a part of the series. Since I couldn't remember the titles that were in the series, I wound up with the four books that had been published up to that point, plus three other Zelazny books that had a similiar cover design.

I still have them all.

I got through the first five (half?) of the Amber books and had to take a break. Maybe I’ll finish ‘em at thebeach next summer.

I got an email about a half-price closeout on Trijicon iron sights. Not all models, but enough to make it interesting.

One major caveat: I've dealt with this company before. They have an extremely bad record for customer service. Mostly, if an item is not in stock, they never tell you, and you never see your money again. If an item is in stock, the deals are usually super.

I also have to add that they appear to be improving their service slightly. It took them only one week to answer my email, and say that an item was on backorder. I'll cut them some slack because I haven't been severely burned by them in the past, and the deals can really be great if they have the stuff.

Oh dear...

Well, it’s now well after ten on the left coast, so I guess family isn’t gonna call. I guess I’ll talk to ‘em on the weekend anyway.

The first five books were the original series, and I'm not sure if he really intended to write any more when he finished the fifth book. The second series ended with a lot more unanswered questions than the first one did, so I'm not sure if I would really recommend reading them.

*sigh* I just looked up the years of publication for the series... I was 13 when I first read Hand of Oberon.

Memory is the second thing to go...

Roger that.

Well, folkses... I wasn’t expecting it, but today I got seated on the jury for a trial. A big one, looks like. Supposed to last two or three weeks.

My boss is really not going to like this.

Openings are tomorrow, and the storm should be in full flow by the time they let us out.

I guess this is when we find out if the engimaneers on the new bridge did all their numbers right.

When I was six, I'd read all the Nancy Drews and Bobbsey Twins and Pippi Longstockings and Curious Georges and Babars. A librarian, probably tired of watching me just flipping through books I'd already checked out, pointed me at the science fiction shelf. I came home with Robert Heinlein and Andre Norton and Dr. Alan Nourse ... heaven help me, I'm still warped.
