This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)
I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Nah....not chastising:). How can I, I haven’t had much to say.
I was right, the horse’s did nothing today:(, I couldn’t even shush them into action. They just all stood there and looked at me like what is this idiot doing, jumping around, throwing things, making noise:)

Posted on this thread, wondering if Frog and Blade or our newest Racking Horse person, Becky, have anything to say :~)
I also took a short video of that Arab that plays with the ball, that I've posted stills of. He didn't do much with it today. Unfortunately I can't get it too load...POS...I'm a bit frustrated:)...Photobucket is doing what it did to me before...jumps fast to 50% loaded then locks up. Not sure what to do...but it wasn't that great of a video anyway.
The horse in the picture with Thor who is the black one is a 9 yo QH. I met his owner yesterday. He was a former reining horse, and they are battling arthritis in him now. That kind of surprised me...9...that's rather young for arthritis isn't it?
Becky
Ooops - forgot to ping them.... Racking ladies... see above!
Well, Thor is a pretty thing! I hope he proves worth what they’ve put in him!
As for arthritis, it’s directly related to his work... things that stress the joints, reining, barrels, jumping, all can cause early arthritis if done too young, or too much.
Well, I got this video to load finally, not sure what I’m doing or not doing..

To bad about the arthritis...he’s kind of a pretty thing, and that’s awful young to have to retire him, which is what she is trying to decide. He gets bute paste every other day, and bute powder on the days he doesn’t get the paste. How long could that go on? I’m not sure if this is on a vets recommendation or just what she is trying. He doesn’t appear lame to me, but I don’t watch close.
Becky
I saw that thread. I don’t know anything about them enough to make any suggestions..in fact, it’s something I worry about, screwing up her gait because I don’t know what I’m doing.
Becky
That baby sure has a PRETTY face! Has he been handled and trained any more since you were there last?
As for bute... not sure why the different forms unless the dose is different, it’s just different forms of the same drug.
I’ve known horses who were on daily bute for years... my trainer’s mare for one, she was injured in a trailer accident as a young horse and had arthritis in her elbow from that. On it, she was fine. If they are given the bute on a full stomach and aren’t prone to stomach trouble, some never have trouble. If there is any possibility, there is something called Ulcer Guard that you can give along with it.
My vet says the only horses who get ulcers from bute are stalled horses who are sick, stressed, or otherwise not eating well.
I think you’ll learn quick... and you’ll have access to Frog.
Ok, I’m not posting clear lately:)
The horse is the video is NOT the baby from last summer, but the other one from last winter, who I had pictures rearing up with the ball in his mouth.
I’m not sure where the baby is. The mother is still here, and one of the ones yesterday that was really strutting around, looking really pretty. Maybe the have the baby somewhere else for the weaning process???
Hope was so easy, I’m hoping I can keep her going as well as she is now. I don’t believe she ever tried to break gait while I was riding her.
I just came in from lunging Harley just a few circles each direction...I see big improvement. There is still a slight head bob every few steps...very slight. I won’t try again till next Mon. but maybe it’s not going to take the month that the farrier said it would...altho in reality, it’s getting close to that time, since he first hurt him self.
Becky
Or maybe I’m just not listening clearly ;~) I thought it was the same baby.
Still, he has a pretty face :~D
Glad Harley’s better. Has he just been on rest, or did you give him anything/do anything special? I’ve not had to deal with a fresh splint, just seen old ones.
For about the first 5 days after I took him to the vet I sprayed his leg with the vinegar/alcohol, but haven’t done anything other then keep him in his run since then. He was re-shod last Fri. The farrier said the splint was still pretty sore, and would be a month healing. Personally, I didn’t think it was all that sore...and thought he was really really mashing and pressing on it harder then he needed too:). I mean, as hard as he did seem to be mashing it, I thought the reaction from the horse could have just been from the pressure not necessarily from soreness.
I’ve been tempted to give him some bute:) not so’s I can ride, but wondering if it would take any inflammation out faster...it doesn’t look swollen to me tho. But, you know me, I worry that if it isn’t hurting he’s liable to do more then he should...kind of a catch 22 thing.
Becky
Did you notice the white hair on Thor’s withers...(isn’t that a horrible name). I’ve been wondering what would have caused that. You suppose he was in some kind of harness or cast for his ribs?
I’ll have to try to remember to ask Debbie.
Becky
I don’t know if Bute would help with that kind of inflammation... but I’d probably ask the vet. And ask if he’s really making it worse if he feels good enough to move more.
Some kind of injuries they can make it worse, like tendon injuries. But some kind of injuries are not made better or worse through movement. They just are what they are and take the time they take to heal. A splint might only be made worse IF he strikes it again in the same place. I don’t know, just thinking out loud.
I think Thor is a pretty cool name, actually... it’s got a lot of testosterone and thunder in it. :~)
I did see the white hairs, only because you’d mentioned it and I looked for it. I assumed it was part of the injury, but it could be rubs from some kind of harness rig.
From what I’ve read and what the vet said, walking around won’t hurt it, but trotting and hard movement will. That’s why she said to keep him in a small area...discourage hard play. And no riding, or forced exercise.
Splints are cause from injuries such as he did to himself, or more frequently in young horses that are being worked to hard for growing bones. Splints are a bone injury, not soft tissue.
If I did bute, (which at this point I’ve pretty much decided not too, since he is making progress), I’d still have kept him in his run. he can run and play there, but so far hasn’t.
I’m just ready to sell him, need patience:)
Becky
I don’t think he was injured there...the post went in his chest. Broke ribs and his sternum...collapsed a lung.
Becky
Well, you'll know when something's not right because it won't be smooth and all you can do at that point is try different things until you hit on something that works, whether it be more contact and collection, shifting your weight, more speed, less speed, whatever. Just don't let them persist in doing the wrong thing or it becomes a habit. Thankfully most of my horses seem to be fairly easy as far as getting and maintaining a smooth gait goes. I've ridden with people who have to have super long feet or heavy shoes or chains or whatever, and I just hope to goodness that I don't ever have to deal with that. I'd rather breed for it than shoe for it.
Thor looks pretty darned good in that picture. It’s amazing really, given what he’s been through. And that’s strange about the white hairs. I didn’t notice it either until you mentioned it. It may just be an old scar or it may be a birth mark. Tennessee has a little patch of white like that on his withers. He had it when I got him as a 2yr old and I have no idea what, if anything, caused it. It’s the only white on him, other than a small star on his forehead that’s shaped like a back-slash.
Just about settled in but I’ll NEVER do this again
This was the move from hell. The movers ruined my furniture and I’m getting no satisfaction from them at all.....spread the word Morse Van Lines out of Painesville is awful.
I got another horse to be Waylon’s friend, he’s a paint and I will bring him home in the next few weeks. My fence was just finished today so probably next week.
My barn is done but the stalls arent’...Phil is still in Ohio doing the deer hunting thing.....will get them finished as soon as he comes home.
I love this area and I love seeing the sun and blue sky every day...something sorely lacking in NE Ohio
I was so fortunate to sell my house so quick. From what I hear, the market up there is awful. I think it’s awful countrywide however.
