FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

The guy in the cammo hat is cute! (grin) I love horses in the fall. It’s so soothing.

This WD kid, doesn’t she already have a horse that she can’t handle? Why would someone in their right mind sell her another, knowing what’s going on with her current horse?

The high winds here make me nervous also, but I don’t have to worry about trees coming down. Think I’d probably head for a casino in that case. Somewhere where I couldn’t hear it or see it. Except what would I do with all the animals :)

Yes, she does have a horse, Boomer. Now in fairness to Boomer, she’s had him since he was a baby and now he’s five, and he just still doesn’t know anything (and neither does she) She goes out and flails around him, and watching him calmly tolerating her I honestly think the horse is a gem. He just needs trained. All she’s done is pet him for five years.

What we have here is a gal who has had a horse five years, been on the forum asking all kinds of questions for one, and still doesn’t know any more about it than when she started, and has very few resources to get help. No lessons, parents won’t pay for training.

I think I’ve grown borderline unreasonably afraid. But I’m not sure what to do about it. It’s not good to let fear consume me the whole night before these things, but the fear isn’t all that irrational either. The risks are huge and would be really bad for us.

ecurbh tolerates me pretty well. He lets me do all the worrying.

I’m not trying to be harsh or catty, but it makes my brain short circut knowing that someone would sell her a horse knowing that she knows so little, with zero opportunity to improve. I’d be more than concerned if my horse went into that kind of situation. I say this out of concern for the welfare of the horse, not as an opportunity to ridicule the person.

I can understand that though - I have an unreasonable fear of fires. Hopefully, you won’t have any more big storms.

I agree. On one of her earlier threads talking about selling Boomer and getting another horse, I suggested she shouldn’t get another horse unless her parents made a commitment to spend the money it will take... lessons, tack, basic horse care... it would seem they thought they could get girlie a baby horse and never spend another dime.

I said Boomer has been very low maintenance and an easy keeper, hasn’t needed trimming but every six months or whenever they can get someone over to hack at his feet, and hasn’t needed a vet. A new horse may not be so low maintenance. I wouldn’t put a new horse there till there was a definite attitude change.

We all have our phobias... I just get sooo nervous. I start cleaning house and getting uber prepared. Then I sit down and I think of something else I should do... like put halters on all the horses... What if a tree takes out the fence and I have to catch them? What if a tree is on the barn and I can’t get to the leads? Oooh - the leads better be in the truck. Stuff like that. You think that’s nuts?.

No - that’s not nuts :) Having leads available and halters on makes sense. However, if I were you, I’d put a couple of halters and leads on the back porch or the bed of the truck to always have on hand. Remember though, I’m speaking from the position of having 25-30 halters laying around with at least as many leads. And hay strings, and leashes. There’s always something on hand to catch a loose horse. I have the vet on speed dial :)

Good. I just think most other people never worry about any of this stuff and I do, and most of the time I didn’t need to. I don’t really want to be right, but it leaves me feeling a little obsessive when I do all that and nothing happens.

Over indulgent parents without a clue in the world. However, at the same time, I can only blame her parents up to a point. WDW is old enough to know right from wrong and take the responsibility for the welfare of her horse, even if it's just taking the time to read and learn. She seems to think that they are just giant furry playthings. Also, I can't believe that someone would just buy her a horse! Where do I get in that line? :-D

Baring wind storms and trees coming down - horses break gates, open gates, run through fences and untie themselves. Your horses are really very well behaved, Bay has them well in hand :) We have to deal with a loose horse every two or three months. Basically that’s why we have it set up that they have to go through two gates to get off the property. And I did have one go through the fence to the street (Indy was chasing her).

I’m a big believer in the dual gate system :~)

Well, I don’t see myself changing... I’m a lot like my dad. I run around in a little flurry and that helps me feel a little bit in control.

Hopefully ecurbh’ll keep being understanding and calming :~)
