FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

I took the first space I could squeeze into, which just happened to be right in front of where the band later set up to play. What time did you end up getting out of there? I talked to Billy today and he said he was not very sore at all, so 7 hours in the saddle and hurting his boys did not affect him to badly ;-)

It wasn’t too late. Maybe 3:30 or a quarter to 4. Conrad and Orbin helped me back out. I got back to the barn right before dark. How about y’all?

I’m back in the house... wind advisory isn’t actually over for three more hours, but I decided it had stopped. No damage here.

Great pictures of your ride... :~)

Well that’s good news. I know that those tall pine trees in my front yard worry me when the wind gets up so I can imagine what is’s like around your place in a high wind. A high pucker factor for sure!

Copied over from the HH:

Nothing obvious down right here.. I haven’t been out in the woods to look. It was really not bad right here, I’ve seen worse, even though the reported high gusts are really high around town, we didn’t even lose many limbs. It was very squirrelly... It would be roaring across the street and nothing on my side. Or the trees in the back forty would be blowing around, but not in the yard. The truck would buffet around and the trees were all quiet. Very weird. Tree went across the road on 113th a couple miles away, I took a road trip down there and got a picture of that... and I guess Hwy 101 was closed for trees down.

Also copied from HH :~)

I think it's pretty much over, though we have gotten a couple more 'final' gusts in the last few minutes.

Here's a short storm diary :~)

I spent the storm with Homer beside me... He didn't ask to be up front with me... he just came through the window :~\

So we sat there, blank looks on our faces... for three hours... I felt like Puddy... "What... are you just gonna ~sit~ there?"

Gidget and Barkley in the back... I will say, for all Barkley's issues... storm and noise nervousnous isn't one of them... and that's nice :~)

Bay looking pretty miserable when I went to check on him at one point.

I was pleased when it settled down enough for them to want to go back inside.

113th... just down the road...

I tried to take some video during gusts, but it didn't come out showing much. Not worth uploading. I learned that if I want to show movement I need to be still... I was panning around too much.

That’s funny about Homer coming through the back window with you. Poor ol’ guy! And poor ol’ Bay looking so be-draggled. Hopefully this is the end of it thought and y’all will have a nice calm night.

If I wasn’t so full of caffeine I’d take a nap. I’m tired but vibrating :~)

I think Gidget is mostly just hyped up to go for a ride... she’s thinking... “So... where are we going? ... We ... are going somewhere aren’t we?”

He was a really pretty little horse and looked more like a Paso Fino to me than a Peruvian. He was taller than most Peruvians for one thing, and not nearly as heavily bodied as they usually are either, but BOY did he pick up those feet. I haven't been around all that many of them so it was kinda strange to watch. He'd pick up those front feet almost as soon as they hit the ground, almost like they had hot coals under them. And he winged his front feet out to the sides, so that was different looking too.

I don't know enough to know the two types apart, but I do remember that paddling...

Those are great pictures. Trees are beautiful there as they turn colors.

Poor Bay. Homer looks like he’s on guard to protect you from whatever, Gidget looks like she doesn’t want to be there, and Barkley looks like he is ready to go for a ride :) Glad you made it through okay.

Heh... Gidget has one look that might be excitement and might be nervousness. ;~)

Cyn wasn’t in much better humor today. Bay’s looking better tonight all dried off and standing out of the rain.

I don’t remember you getting heavy wind like this in the past, just recently. Was I just not paying attention?

Last year was a particularly bad year. We usually get maybe one or two storms that near 40 per winter, and last year there were many, a couple that were really rather strong...the type that have happened once a decade or so. Hopefully we won’t have strings of these storms this year, just a couple. I’m really very easily spooked by them. Areas very near here had gusts to nearly 80. I don’t think we got that, I think we sometimes get some benefit from the hills of Capitol forest.
