Evan Almighty, Hollywood Strikes Out Again
ExileStreet ^ | 7/26/07 | Mark Joseph

I've produced three books, The Rock & Roll Rebellion, Faith, God & Rock n' Roll and Pop Goes Religion, all making the case for lowering the wall of separation between faith and entertainment. But if the result is both dumbed-down religion and comedy as in the box office flop Evan Almighty, it may be the strongest argument yet for reinstating that wall and keeping religion and the movies as far apart as possible.

In its aftermath, once again the chatter from Hollywood is how, despite another earnest and sincere attempt to make a movie for "those people," the elusive faith-based audience that came out to see the Passion of The Christ has once again failed to turn out en masse for a movie thought to be tailor-made for them. I enjoyed Transformers, a lot!
But then I’m an old Gundam fan, too.

‘Go see Transformers. Its worth the trip in.’

So I’ve heard. We have a drive in within 20 minutes of the house...as opposed to the theaters that are 40.

Is Mallrats one of the Jay and Silent Bob movies? I've seen Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and thought both were pretty good.

I have that for the PS3. I’m not all that impressed with the game play, but the graphics are very cool.

I don’t play games anymore - I’m married and have to clean to the kitchen on weeknights and do yard and house work on weekends...
IF you are going to talk games, though, you need to try Armored Core. I think it is up to AC4 now. Never played the games, but they look very, very, very cool!

We don’t have kids, its a hobby for rainy days. The best I’ve ever seen both game playing and graphics is ‘Resistence; Fall of Mankind’.

Unique premise, unbelievable graphics, fast play. First person shooter. Set in 1951 London of all places. You get a chance, check out some screen shots, amazing.

Thanks, I thought you were calling Catholicism a cult, that’s a relief. I saw about 10 minutes of Dogma, and it was so horrid that I turned it off, so wasn’t aware of the plot. (Actually, from the way it started, I thought it was most likely that it had no plot.)

Tell me about why you liked “The Station Agent”. I am looking for great movies that are not well known to show to a church group. Would this qualify, and if so, why?

Thanks in advance for your response!

What blows my mind about this film, is not the movie itself,
its not bad fair... sort of think of it as a poor imitation
of “Oh God.”

Thanks for the comment; I still like "Oh, God!".
My favorite scene was when John Denver's character asked for
"a sign" when driving around (in an AMC Pacer?).
And HE made it precipitate only within the car.

"You need a sign and expect me to ruin everybody else's day?"

Religion to the Hollywood crowd is two people in bed screaming, “Oh, God!”

Dah-dy would have gotten us Uuuzis.

For 20 years I’ve used that line anytime I’ve found an opening to do so.

the only problem i had with dogma is them having alanis as “God.” other than that it was really good. J&SB movies are all good.

morgan freeman is fine as God in my opinion. classy with great voice.
the only better “God” voice would be james earl jones.

My issue with it is that I think it is contrived. In today's Hollywood, the people chosen to portray God have to be either:

African American
Female
Homosexual

A black Lesbian as God is just perfect. Didn't Whoopi get the job at one point?

I'm not saying "God is a white guy". I'm just saying that Hollywood seems to believe "God CAN'T be a white guy". It drips with political correctness.

Yeah, I wondered about that from the previews, but there is no flood. There is a use for the Ark, but it is not a flood.

there really haven’t been enough people that played God to really say much about it. lots of God voices, but.. how many people have actually played God? only about a dozen. charleton heston played him once, but whoopi never did. then there also george burns, and the guy that played him at the beginning of dogma.. then you get into some of the metaphors for God like metatron, voice of God or the guy that played the architecht in matrix, or the guy that ran the truman show.
