New Denzel Flick Films In Sanders
Harvard Crimson ^ | July 23, 2007 | By ABBY D. PHILLIP

White tents, large generators and an oddly dressed collection of mannequins graced the lawn in front of Memorial Hall this weekend, as Sanders Theater was the site of filming for a new Denzel Washington flick, “The Great Debaters.”

The movie chronicles the true story of Melvin B. Tolson, a 1930s-era professor at Wiley College, located in Marshall Texas. In 1935, Thompson led a recently-formed debate team made up of Wiley students to a win over Harvard in the national championship.

In addition to directing the film, Washington will star as Tolson when the movie is released next year. Forest Whitaker and Kimberly Elise are also slated to appear in the film, according to the Internet Movie Database.

The commotion surrounding the movie brought with it the chance for fame for some Harvard students.

Denzel gets every “intense, articulate black man” role that comes along. Lighten up and do a Farrely Brothers movie or something.

I just watched this movie... its May 2008, and the movie seems to have opened summer 2007. I must say I very much enjoyed the movie, but not too far into it, the curiosity started to creep in that perhaps this movie is a Hollywood setup tool for Obama. While watching I kept thinking how many votes this movie is worth. Now, if the movie was released this Spring, there would be no doubt about its agenda. And if the movie was released, say, in 2005, I'd think nothing of the sort. With a release of summer 2007, however, the movie could very well have been conceived in 2005 or 6.

Anyways, I thought I'd revive this thread to give the movie some exposure here, as it seems relevant after viewing it.
