The 23 month old granddaughter of State Senator (D) Dave Hansen has died after being hit by a car outside the home of the senator on Coppens Road in Green Bay.
Hansen's office has confirmed the death of Ellie Zaidel, releasing a statement that reads in part, " Senator Hansen was leaving to attend a meeting at approximately 8:40, when his granddaughter unbeknownst to either him or her grandmother, ran out of the house and behind his car and was struck as he was backing out of the driveway."

How horrible.
Horrible news. Prayers.

Sad. Another great Paul Harvey story.
So sad... prayers for the family.
Not his fault but how will he ever forgive himself? Truly a nightmare. Prayers for all in that family.
Prayers for the whole family.
I don’t know if it’s me or what, but I know 2 other people here in Wisconsin which have done the exact same thing.
Hansen and his wife have baby-sat the girl for about a year while her parents worked. The toddler was sitting on a sofa when her grandmother left the room to get a blanket so the two could snuggle after the senator left for his meeting, Wadd said. The girl then ran outside. It happened that fast, Wadd said. I think Ellie wanted to be with Grandpa. She just loved him.
Tragic indeed. Unimaginable pain this family will go through.
I’d forgotten about an incident like this I almost witnessed. I was credit manager many moons ago for a big tire company. At the opposite end of the property from my office was the truck shop. I looked out to see a woman screaming hysterically as her husband was backing an 18 wheeler into a bay. He could not see her OR their 2 year old standing under that truck. I grabbed the intercom, but he couldn’t hear it, so I ran screeching (Got everyones attention! lol)and waving my arms and the guy finally saw me and stopped. Man! I wish I could still move that fast!
Prayers for the family. How horrible.
Oh God Bless you!
(prayers for the Grandpa in this story)
Our hearts go out to them. God bless that family.
How sad.
Wonder if he was running late, or arguing with his wife and so neither of them were looking out for their granddaughter.
Horrifying, tragic & this happens way too often. I absolutely LOVE having rear cameras in both our vehicles.
I cannot imagine a greater horror. Prayers for the entire family.
Okay, my sincere part: Very sad and tragic. Prayers go out to the family.
My sarcastic part: No doubt the Democrat senator will now act to either ban running, driveways, or automobiles - or any combination thereof. It’s for the children. If it saves just one life,....
I think Ellie wanted to be with Grandpa. She just loved him.
If he’s unable to overcome his grief, I’m betting Grandpa will be meeting up with Ellie again soon enough.
MIL told me about this last night. She stopped by to drop off some produce from her garden, and I told her about the time a neighbor backed over his dog in his driveway. I had never heard a man “howl” like that man did when he accidentally killed his dog. I can’t imagine what Mr. Hansen feels, or how he howled to Heaven.
I’ll never forget that sound as long as I live. *SHIVER*
Heartfelt prayers up for this family. They are going to need God’s Grace right now to get through this.
I was walking through a parking lot, carrying my two year old and holding my five year old’s hand, when he was suddenly shoved into me, by a car backing over his foot. I was shouting for them to stop, pushing at the car, terrified my son was going to get knocked entirely under, trying to pull him away and not drop my daughter...then I started screaming and they finally stopped. I have never been so intensely terrified.
The new cars are harder to see out of than the old ones. As soon as my children could understand, I started telling them that drivers could not see them behind a car. When my children were very small I would make someone be on watch duty when I was pulling out.
Prayers for the family, and the grandparents especially. They must be torn into shreds over this.
