Death Sentence for pizza deliveryman
CBS News ^

Posted on 07/11/2007 8:07:55 AM PDT by John Cena

(AP) A pizza deliveryman was sentenced to death Tuesday for the murders of 10 women and an unborn fetus during the 1980s and '90s in Los Angeles neighborhoods plagued by a crack cocaine epidemic.

A jury in May recommended the death penalty for Chester Turner, and Superior Court Judge William R. Pounders on Tuesday agreed.

"I don't think any jury would arrive at a different conclusion and would, in any court, demand a death penalty," Pounders said.

Turner, 40, declined to say anything in court after several of the victims' relatives spoke at the hearing. The case will automatically be appealed.

Prosecutors said Turner preyed upon prostitutes and other impoverished women with drug problems who lived primarily in South Los Angeles.

He was convicted April 30 of 10 counts of first-degree murder, plus one count of second-degree murder for the death of one victim's fetus. That victim, Regina Washington, 27, was 6 ½ months pregnant when Turner strangled her with an electrical cord behind a vacant house in September 1989.

Another victim was found slumped over a portable toilet, and one woman was found in front of a crack house.

Turner was already serving an eight-year prison sentence for the 2002 rape of a woman on Skid Row when his DNA linked him to the 10 killings, carried out between 1987 and 1998.

As opposed to a "born fetus?" How about an "unborn child?"

Okay, we fry him (or poison him, or whatever).

Are we any safer? Are the deeds undone? Given the huge amount of legal fees involved, are we gonna save any money? Do we really want to hear about his case for the next 10 years?

Naw, just put him in a cell with Crazy Charlie Manson, and let him stay there. It’ll be cheaper, the guy will be less safe (darned the luck if he gets Dahmler’d), and we won’t hear another thing about this horrible case.

How about “DEATH SENTENCE FOR MULTIPLE MURDERS OF INNOCENT WOMAN AND A BABY” as the headline. - Gives a little different image than the Papa johns driver from story’s headline.

Hey, why don’t we just let him go free!!!???

That would be THE cheapest solution. Maybe he’d even pay some taxes and actually contribute revenue.

Are we any safer?

Yep.

Are the deeds undone?

Nope, but irrelevant.

are we gonna save any money?

Nope, but irrelevant.

Do we really want to hear about his case for the next 10 years?

So turn off your tv.

Naw, just put him in a cell

What if he kills a guard? What if he escapes? What if some numbnuts Governor Moonbeam pardons him in 35 years?

Nope. Let the appeals run their course, then give him a date with the needle.

Some folks just plain need killing. This scumsucker is one of 'em.

That’s the headline that CBS gives in it’s article. I was told when I began posting that the title I give in the thread should always be the same as what the one for the news story is.

Are we any safer?

The statistician John Lott (famous for the study/book "More Guns Less Crime") shows that each execution prevents up to 18 more murders, mostly as a deterrent. So, yes, fry the guy and we will be safer.

You’ve misidentified arguments for expediting death penalty sentences as arguments for commuting them.

Actually we are safer when scumbags like that are permanently removed from the society, and it is cheaper to execute them high security prison is very very expensive. And remember Charles actually was sentenced to death, then SCOTUS canceled everybody’s death sentences into single life in prison sentences, Manson actually comes up for parole periodically, does that make you feel safe.

This wouldn’t be a problem Just, Fair, and Speedy were operative words in the justice system. Capital punishment is always effective in removing the perpetrator from the human stream. “Deterrent for one please, no waiting...”

Strange headline. Certainly he sentenced to death for murdering those 10 people, not for delivering pizzas. In many jurisdictions, pizza delivery is not even considered a crime...

Depends.
When I saw the headline, I thought the story was about really really bad pizza...

I unerstand, I was just getting in a dig at their headline writers.

No sympathy in that headline for the real victims.
