I’ll look. I’m going to get an external A Drive because I have so much stuff stored that I don’t want to lose.
So I’ll keep the Mavica in mind. Thanks for the info.

I’ve had pretty good experiences with some of the “CoolPix” cameras that Nikon has made. The feature sets are about right for a casual user, the cameras are small enough to pack around in a coat pocket, but big enough to handle without feeling like you’re all thumbs, AND [this feature I LIKE] they use rechargeable “AA”-size NiMH batteries so it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to keep three or four sets in rotation; one set in the camera, two sets in the recharger, and one set standing by as backup for when the first set runs low on juice.
In fact, the only things I have not liked about the two CoolPix cameras we’ve had are these:
#1 If you have the flash set to “Auto” or “Red-eye Reduction” modes, shutter release is delayed a fractional second from the moment you press the button, and we’ve missed a few otherwise decent shots as a result.
#2 The LCD screen on the back of the camera is UNprotected. All it takes is a single, sharp whack and you’ll crack the glass in the LCD element. That’s $90 and a half hour with jeweler’s screwdrivers to fix, and, if the blow ruined the backlight portion of the screen, your repair job will also require a soldering iron.
I have compensated for problem #1 by selecting “No Flash” where it is reasonable to do so. This is not a problem at all as long as the subject is not in motion and there’s a tripod or some other solid object against which to steady the camera. [Actually, the flash tends to screw up the colors of things — purples, in particular, tend to come out royal blue — so going with no flash gives better color if the light is otherwise sufficient.]
I have compensated for problem #2 by replacing one LCD screen [fortunately the backlight did NOT require replacing] and using cyanoacrylate cement to affix a .06” clear polycarbonate plastic rectangle to the face of the bezel on the outside of the camera body.

Oops. Three things
#3 The recovery time required after taking a flash photograph is a bit on the long side — several seconds. My understanding is that the newer cameras have internal circuitry that overcomes this issue, as well as delays that some older cameras had while writing to their memory cards.

We are quite familiar with the Nikon CoolPix. I have the tiny S3 with the internal battery and LoM has the L3 with the AA cells. She bought a charger with 4 NiMH AA cells for it -- as I did Friday for the new Canon S3 IS.
The CoolPix does work pretty well out of the box. I've had to go into the menus to change a few things to my liking. (I hate unnecessary noise from the tools so I turned off all sounds; I also arranged for it to display my business card + cellphone number when first turned on.)
I turned off the "red-eye" mode, but maybe it's still on auto because there are delays when I'm using the flash. I do any red-eye elimination on the computer (along with "glasses-flash" reduction).
I also minimize my use of flash by using "sports" mode and lightening the result on the computer. I minimize use of "sports" mode indoors, though, because it seems to work some motor (focus?) really hard. The result is not always perfect, but if I am really interested in a perfect picture indoors I am NOT using this camera. It was the answer to "I'd like to have a camera with me always, but the D70 is sometimes too big to lug."
All our cameras reside in cases when not in use, and when in use (with rare exception) the lanyard's around my wrist, a habit I got into decades ago.
Haven't had an issue with unprotected screens yet, going back over 9 years with the Mavica, but then I'm near paranoid about damage to them. (The screen protector on my Zaurus PDA is some 4 years old.)
