Red Hat Looks to Expand Footprint
New Telephony ^ | 6-19-2007 | RedHat

Posted on 06/26/2007 8:31:39 AM PDT by N3WBI3

Red Hat Inc., a provider of open source platforms, said Tuesday it has taken steps to expand its footprint in the telecommunications market.

Those steps include the acquisition of Mobicents technology and new membership to the SCOPE alliance.

Mobicents adds a service logic execution environment (SLEE) to Red Hat's technology portfolio and complements J2EE to enable convergence of voice, video and data in next-generation applications, Red Hat said. Mobicents is certified for JSLEE 1.0 compliance.

Red Hat said it intends to develop a communications platform that integrates Mobicents with Red Hat middleware offerings. The company said more information about subscription product offerings will be available later this year. Meanwhile, Red Hat said it will offer a pilot/beta program for development and deployment of production applications and solutions that incorporate Mobicents technology.

Red Hat also has joined the SCOPE Alliance and will be contributing to the definition and prioritization of carrier-grade operating system and middleware requirements. The company said it will work with the Linux community to define a roadmap for availability of carrier-grade operating system requirements.

The SCOPE Alliance, formed in January 2006 by Alcatel, Ericsson, Motorola, NEC, Nokia and Siemens, and was founded to drive the adoption of open source software and commodity hardware in carrier-grade environments as an alternative to proprietary Unix platforms. SCOPE works to define hardware and software requirements for open platforms in telecommunications environments. It currently develops requirements profiles for various hardware and software components, including a profile for carrier-grade Linux.

Oh great, now I will have tens of thousands of stupid dependencies just to dial the phone. And I’ll have to be root to do it.

Well, I hate telephones anyway so maybe it wont be so bad having a completely unusable one from the iTards who supply us with the most unusable OS in the world.

At work they only support red hat 4 and it sucks big time. I would never put anyting as stupid as linux on a machine I actually owned, esp. after trying to install the mplayer plug in at work.

It is the most stupid thing ever.

Hmmmm......

You're basing your statements on RedHat 4???

What would your opinion be if someone said today that they were an all Solaris shop because Windows For Workgroups really sucks.

I think he meant RHEL 4, which is fairly current. RHEL 5 was only released a couple of months ago.

Having worked with RHEL4 and Solaris 10, and AIX 4.3, and Windows server 2k,2k3,nt) youll have to tell me what stunk so bad about RHEL.

I replaced out windows based IVR with a RHEL4 box running Asterisk and the reliability improved enough that I had former Linux bashers asking if I could port our voicemail system (also on windows to it).

Just trying to install anything is ultra-stupid. I tried to install one of those programs where you only have to do 50,000 steps to save 5000 steps but it was another 100,000 steps to install.

why don’t they include all the dependencies with the package? And why is the mplayer plugin so stupid to try to install?

Solaris has always been pretty stupid and sun has the worst customer service. They assume the customer is a criminal.

Aix has always worked pretty well and IBM has stellar customer service but I still wouldn’t install aix on anything I actually owned ‘cause I like to use the software, I don’t like to spend all my time trying to d/l stupid, idiot, mind numbing, evil dependancies.

The Atari 800XL is still the best computer I ever owned. Everything just worked. The comodor 64 was okay but it ate one of my games once when I tried to make a backup. Remember Boulder Dash? That was a great game. Good times. Not stupid times, like linux gives.

up2date -i

Please keep in mind redhat will be packaging the software in question into its distro meaning all you have to do is type that line..

oh yea, ultra stupid.. What, may I ask, were you trying to install?

why don’t they include all the dependencies with the package? And why is the mplayer plugin so stupid to try to install?

So it was mplayer you were tryig to install? Did you try this (http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/mplayer/). I never installed it on 4 because I used it as a server but I believe the reason they don't package the codecs for dvd and mp3 is because of copyright reason.

So your complaint about RH and Solaris... is they are not good desktops... Hello captain obvious! Windows and OSX are better desktops than either RH and fedora what has that to do with the price of tea in china? RH and Solaris make their bucks in the server scope.

I don’t like to spend all my time trying to d/l stupid, idiot, mind numbing, evil dependancies.

I love it when someone acts like an idiot, makes their life harder, and then calls other people idiots.

Considering the fact that what he's complaining about is the equivalent of third-party plugins for an Adobe product not being on microsoft's update site, I'd have to agree with you.

Well, it’s true, isn’t it? All the lunixtics pretend that loonix is better then everything else when it is barely usable. And yet, who in their right minds wants to upgrade to vista?

The lunixtics have the perfect opportunity and, much like the Republicans, they are going t squander it. So, in fact, they are idiots. Much like the Republicans.

No, it's not. Whenever I want to install a new piece of software I type:

yum install < packagename >
and that's it. It downloads and installs the package, and all the dependencies. It updates the menus and libraries. No muss. No fuss.

Yum comes with all RH and Fedora distros. It's installed as part of the base system.

I know but you have to figure out what to put in the up2date conf file or the yum conf file. And if it isn’t the right thing, it doesn’t tell you what the right thing is and it’s just so stupid, why don’t the people who write the software give you all that stuff.

The other thing I never got to install properly or install and work was Tentekel. There was another one that kind of worked for running the same command on many different machines but not quite.

I don’t know, it just seems like if you have to read the manual, the thing the manual describes is poorly designed. Loonix is poorly designed times infinity. That’s what it is. I didn’t make it that way. It’s a lot like the Surrender to Mexico bill. Even an idiot, such as my self, can see how idiotic it is and that the people who design it are even bigger idiots them me. Which is kind of sad, really.

I’m good at fighting aliens and saving babes but that’s really about it. One liners too, I guess. But I’m smart enough to know that linux sucks. Go figure.

Since you linux guys love foreign sources, here’s one of your favorites talking about Red Flag today:

Red Hat’s Exchange roars like a muted lamb

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/26/redhat_rhx_update/page2.html

RHX, as the kids call it, was meant to solidify Red Hat’s place as the epicenter of all things tied to Linux servers.

Linux zealots tend to be, well, zealots more than happy to share their opinions on everything from cumquat infestations to koala shavings.

At the moment, the entire RHX site feels rather clinical and certainly fails to inspire.
