Report: Vista more secure than OS X and Linux

Attention Linux, Vista, and Apple fan boys: put on your gloves... it's time to rumble! A 6-month vulnerability report issued by Jeff "Security Guy" Jones has caught the eye of Redmond and the ire of places beyond. The report which bases its security assessment upon vulnerabilities found (not actually exploited) claims that Vista is "more secure than OS X and Linux." In fact, the much maligned XP even crushes the competition using their calculations. Of course, it's worth noting that Jeff is a member of Microsoft's Security business unit which will probably sway your opinion as to the integrity of the data. Still, as incomplete as the assessment may be, it certainly appears to be a good showing for Vista considering the vast community of hackers attempting to thwart its security. We can predict what Billy G's probably saying right about now: Dy-no-mite JJ!

Mayhap you should. Vista has had several updates in the past two weeks.

I was kinda wondering what it ran like on a VM. Glad to hear that, since I was gonna goof with it in a few days. As far as security, it’s never been a problem.

No virii, trojans - nothing...ever.

And I’ve never had a BSOD, either.

I must be doing something wrong...;-)

&

I’m happy for you. At work, however, I’m one of many that’s successfully spearheading a movement to switch to Linux. This is epic. The cost to upgrade to Vista brings negative ROI. Legacy apps will not run under Vista. So, its time to bite the bullet and re-write our internal apps in Java, make them OS-agnostic. The cost of the re-write will be far less than the cost to migrate to Vista. (If we move to Vista, the apps would have to be re-written anyway, PLUS, we’d have to scrap all our hardware.) This way we can keep our hardware, and finally see a day where M$ licensing fees will be a faint memory.

it’s not like I have every suggested that
Mac’s are for homosexuals or anything.

And no one ever said that Linux users are
a bunch of panty waisted nerd balls,
who haven’t had a date in... (whats a date?)
Oh yes, reference under lack of contact with

but that is of course what should be expected of the market leader.

Seems to me they REALLY screwed the pooch on IE. They basically did nothing for years. Even before Firefox came out, Opera had done some neat stuff that Microsoft could have easily implemented.

MS will regret not having kicked an extra $10 million into IE when they still totally controlled the market.

Sorry, I don't buy it.

That's fine, but that is what all available security reports and statistics seem to be indicating right now.

Trying doing a Google search on "Vista Animated Cursor Security Hole" -- what you'll learn is that Vista is NOT a re-write, but re-hashed XP - BECAUSE XP has / had the same vulnerability. Vista's base code = XP. Same crap.

Yeah I think there has been one vulnerability that was across the two platforms, any others?

From a usability stand point, its much, much worse and far more intrusive. If you have any kind of intellectual curiosity, You MUST read A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection By Professor Gutmann. It is a stunning eye-opener of Vista.

I think I have seen that. It's mostly about how usability might have to be given up a little in order to access certain content isn't it? Such as when the DVD and HDTV signals are encrypted by the movie and music industries to prevent piracy, from what I understand.

It's herd psychology: "Even if Windows sucks, at least I'll be in the same boat with everyone else... you can't go wrong buying 'the standard' after all..."

>> ...trash the open source and BSD communities...

> Hardly ever. It's Stallman and his "free software" I have some questions about.

"Hardly ever"? That's a riot. Do you think I don't read your comments? You make Ballmer's spew about "open source is a cancer" sound like praise by comparison, and your brush is even broader than his.

As for Stallman, you and I have agreed in the past the RMS is a loony who had a good idea, wrote some outstanding software, and then became a quasi-religious fanatic. I respect his software work but I am annoyed and dismayed by his political rants.

I am a strong proponent of open source where it's appropriate, and closed source where it's appropriate. I work for a company that leverages open source in the form of tools and also uses tons of proprietary software. Closing one's eyes to the values of both is stupid.

And you don't "have questions", you spout accusations, only a fraction of which have basis in fact. You're a troll. An occasionally entertaining troll, but a troll nonetheless. And a shameless shill for Redmond.

Anyway, welcome to the thread.

With all the security issues involved, transparency is only a fleeting moment unless you don’t access the Internet via Vista?

VMware Workstation 6 is the hottest thing out right now, but I run Vista in VMware Server with no problems. The only drawback there is no Aero, but the new “Standard” interface looks good is awfully quick in a VM.

You missed the point re: Animated Cursor. Vista was supposed to be a complete re-write. The fact that it has the same vulnerability as XP, indicates that Vista is NOT a re-write. Give it time, like XP, you'll have to update you're Vista daily.

Go ahead and read Professor Gutmann's analysis. Its very long and VERY thorough. Its much, much more than your tiny summary.

Do you actually use both operating systems?

I do, daily. I’ve got a Dell Core 2 Duo Inspiron 9400 as my main “play” computer and living room media centre, running Vista, and I’ve got a Core 2 Duo MacBook running 10.4.10 as my portable computer and bedroom system.

I like both, indeed, I like Tiger better when it comes to creative applications and the like... But, right now, I would rate Vista as the more stable operating system of the two.

IE - at the moment, there’s a bug in Tiger which screws up shared videos in Front Row, and there’s another bug which causes Kernel Panics when using Airport on the Core 2 Duo machines with Wireless-N on battery, among other things.

I have no problems with Vista, security or accessing the internet.

Unless someone cuts the fiber line..which has happened...

Looks like you're wrong again dude, and seem to be the one spewing about now. I run BSD all the time, and have been a long time supporter of Solaris which now has an open source version. Ask Shadow, Newbie, AntiRepublican, any of them, I'm a GNU/Linux critic, not Unix.
