A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said Wednesday.
Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night. The man who was killed had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said.
The Austin Police Department identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police spokeswoman Toni Chovonetz said she had no further information, including how many people were involved.
The driver was able to get away is cooperating with investigators, police said.
Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.
Animals.
I think blacks “dislike” Mexicans even more than they “dislike” whites.
Notice I didn’t say hate.
Only WHITE people hate.
The passenger disrespected the crowd so he had to die
I presume you have never been to East Austin?
In which 3rd-world country did you live?
Some of my (white) friends go to Juneteenth in Milwaukee. They tell me they get stared at a lot, but it’s worth it for the ribs and corn.
No, in the past I have gone to Junetenth celebrations in Austin however, no one was killed.
Just freeze it and save it for Kwanza.
The last line of the article gives you the hint on the crowd’s ethnicity. The passenger’s name hints as to the ethnicity of the occupants of the vehicle. Whites aren’t the only group people of that ethnicity (the crowd) have enmity with. Articles with this sort of omission are more of a case of not bringing up inconvenient statistics or reminders of statistics that might affect the perception of certain hyphenated Americans.
(wow, is it hard to write without mentioning specifics).
Mexicans dislike “pretos” very much usually....which is why I surprised at Kobe’s hot Mex-wife he cheated on.
$$$$$ can cure old prejudices I reckon
in all fairness, Juneteenth is a legitimate day for blacks to recognize I guess...better than Kwanza.
Atlanta has had this for a while but it also has the same problems...with crime, shooting and wilding etc.
Isn’t Juneteenth sorta what used to be Jubilee?
I beleive Texas is the only state in that this is a paid holiday.
>>killed<<
Very neutral-sounding choice of words, isn’t it? I guess that “lynched” or “murdered” would have been too inciting. And it leaves the actual details regarding the manner of death completely unclear. Was the victim hanged, burned alive, shot, or killed by lethal injection?
You can "PC it up" far more than that. It should be:
"The African-American community has a long-standing cultural mistrust of Latinos."
How'd I do? I should be a journalist.
I can see that but down here a BBQ joint carries less risk with it.
“Juneteenth”? And all this time I thought it was called “Juneteenf”!
I live in South Austin and go to East Austin almost every day. the reality of East Austin is that it has gentrified and two bedroom tear down houses are selling for a quarter of a million dollars.
You are more likely to see a Yuppie in a BMW than see a urban blight.
Hehehe...
3000 strong drunk mob in a black nieghborhood on a hot day, celebrating a local hero?
Sierra Leone, Brasil, Colombia, Haiti, Jamaica....and a lot of travel to dozens more.....Nicaragua, Guatemala, Burma, Zambia etc.
longest stretches .....Colombia and Haiti
I’m 7th generation Mississippian which is rather similar btw....at least in Jackson. The rural folk while quite poor are much less hostile.
