Four kids in stolen SUV die when it hits train

Four teenagers were killed early Thursday morning when the stolen SUV they were in and a train collided.

It happened in Baytown at Archer Road and Fleming around 3:30 a.m.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, six teenagers were in the stolen Jeep when the driver apparently did not see a Union Pacific train that had apparently been stalled on the tracks for some time. The SUV slammed into the tanker car at a high rate of speed and went under it into a ditch.

Four people in the backseat, three girls and one boy ages 12 to 15, died at the scene.

Two teenage boys, ages 17 and 15, were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by Life Flight. They were the driver and the front-seat passenger.

Union Pacific said the SUV may have hit the train, gone underneath it and slid into a ditch.

There are no streetlights or lights that indicate that there is a train crossing.

Family and friends of the victims gathered at the scene, including the father of one of the victims.

"It's unbelievable what has happened," Doug Moyers said. "I can see my daughter's big toe sticking out from underneath the white blanket; that's all I can see of her is her big toe."

Four teenagers in a vehicle
3:30 am
High rate of speed
Train stalled on track without gates
I would venture to add poor parenting to this list, too

Did I miss anything?

I am an insurance defense lawyer. There will definitely be a lawsuit.

And that, my friend, pisses me off to no end!

My child was a handful, but I NEVER worried about her sneaking out at night.

I can see someone being sued for an unlit grade crossing. Successfully because you ran into a stopped train would be tough.

Um...I would have to disagree. Lots of good things have happened to me after 2am.

When I was in high school someone ran into an embankment driving without headlights. He was being chased by the police on a dark road. He survived but was pretty messed up for a long time.

I’m trying to dredge up some compassion, but I can’t, and the word that keeps drifting through my mind is “brats.”

I’ve done some dumb things, but a 12 year old breaking curfew at 3:30 in a stolen vehicle no less?

I feel sorry for all involved, but what annoys me most is somehow Union Pacific will be blamed. Even though I believe that trains have a passive role in all train vs anything smaller than it matches.

I think that the SUV owner should send a lawsuit to the driver as soon as that thief stabilizes.

You know, if we could just force the automakers to built larger, heavier, SUV’s; more people might survive collisions.../sarcasm off/

“Reading the headline, I thought 4 innocent toddlers were strapped in their car seats when their mother was forced out of the van at gunpoint by a carjacker.

Then I read the “kids” were the carjackers.

Oh well...”

I totally agree with you.

Union Pacific will be blamed

They were already doing that at the scene of the accident -- Never mind that the driver of the vehicle was 15 years old -- never mind that the vehicle was stolen -- yep, it's the railroad's fault.

My child was a handful, but I NEVER worried about her sneaking out at night.

I was an out of control teen and could see myself ending up dead on the side of the road minus the stolen car. On the other hand, one of my most out of control friends has taken his rebellious teen daughter and created a thoughtful, honest, responsible young adult. I'm only a stand in uncle to her but I'm exceedingly proud of the young lady she's become.

The title is sooooo weird.

The youth criminal driver hit the train with the SUV he had stolen. All his accomplices were killed by his actions.

How is this anyone’s “fault” except the perpetrators? How can anyone be sued?

There IS no justice anymore. The law and the courts have become the servants of institutionalized robbery.

Further proof that nothing good ever happens after 2 A.M. in the morning.

My daddy always said nothing good happened after midnight.
