"Old People Suck" Sign Upsets Seniors In Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Three words on a cardboard sign outside a luxury downtown high rise have senior citizens outraged. One senior was so upset she took a picture outside The Vue at Lake Eola, on the corner of Rosalind and Robinson streets.

Some senior citizens were across the street in a small rally when they noticed the construction workers laughing at them. Then they looked by the fence and saw a sign they consider very offensive. The words were scrawled in bold white paint on cardboard.

Sandra Taylor, 64, stood across the street and could feel the sign shouting at her.

"The next thing we knew, we looked over and he had made a sign, holding it, said 'Old People Suck,'" Taylor said.

The construction worker was standing inside the site of one of Orlando's newest, most luxurious high rises in development, The Vue at Lake Eola. Taylor said not only did the worker hold up the sign, but she and other senior citizens were ridiculed.

"It was a lot of laughing, pointing fingers and giggling and hoopla," said Claudia Platt.

Taylor and Platt were a part of a small group of seniors protesting immigration reform across the street.

Eyewitness News showed the picture to construction workers at the site. Some were amused.

"I'm old! I don't suck!" one said.

Then, Eyewitness News went to The Vue's sales center. A woman there was shocked to see the picture.

"No, I have no idea," she said.

The Florida Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons sent Eyewitness News a statement after looking at the snapshot: "AARP believes it is no more okay to be ageist than it is racist or sexist."

Turner Construction, the company that oversees the project, said, because of the incident, they're letting all of the workers on the project know that kind of behavior is unacceptable.

Old people are cool, especially when they stay out of grocery stores on weekends....

They'd better watch it, lest they get a visit from "Hell's Grannies":

Suck, blow, just a long as I’m breathing. Old is hard, but it beats the alternative.

Hee-hee! Here's a sign I like!

Especially since I'm old and it takes me longer to cross the street!

These young folks should know that they too will be old someday...if they are LUCKY. I say this, btw, as an old man of 31.

Since when is 64 old? I think this person should just ignore that stupid sign. She has another 20 years before she is considered “older”.

..and faster than they think, no damn cliche either. How in the hell did I get to be 52, from my youth it seemed like forever from here it was a blink. The real scare comes when you realize you lived longer than you have left to live and that wasn't all that long.

I’m a senior...I just graduated from high school

And honestly I wouldn’t be offended by a “Young people suck” sign. Because, for the most part, it’s true.

I am not a bigot, but having worked in an area that caters to old people I will say they can be very hard to deal with. Especially in any way that has to do with computers
