Vandals kill 400 minks, two dogs at farm
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | June 08, 2007 | Cindi Lash

Posted on 06/08/2007 8:25:41 AM PDT by grundle

Mr. DeMatteis, 48, was staring in horror at the aftermath of an overnight rampage: smashed and toppled cages, carcasses of trampled minks and the bloody bodies of his children's two pet dogs.

"Whoever broke in brutally injured or killed baby minks, nursing mothers, and totally tore the whole ranch apart."

Intruders set loose nearly 2,800 minks, resulting in the deaths of at least 443 animals. They also nearly severed the heads of the family's 19-year-old sheepdog, named Sy, and 2-year-old sheepdog-beagle mix, named Sandy, by shooting or bludgeoning them with something sharp.

Many minks were run over after slipping under a fence and scampering to a nearby road. Others appeared to have been stomped to death near their pens, she said. The dead animals included 340 kits, or baby minks, that weighed less than a pound and were still nursing and helpless.

The intruders wiped out the business started in 1936 by her husband's father and uncle and operated for the past 32 years by her husband. They managed to round up many surviving animals.

But they can no longer breed those minks for sale because they cannot match the animals with pedigree-history information that was posted on pens.

"Our life is done. Our business is done. Our lives are ruined," she said. "Every mink that didn't get killed, we lost its bloodlines. And if mothers don't accept [surviving] babies, they'll starve to death."

Her two daughters and her son, ages 8, 7 and 4, are inconsolable over losing beloved dogs. The minks were not insured because "nobody would give us insurance with these animal rights groups."

"We can't imagine who would do this to us," she said, breaking down again. "This was my husband's livelihood. This was our life. But I don't know if I can do it anymore."

Nope. Remember these people will kill anyone or anything to accomplish their goals.

They are also completely clueless.

Kill the guard dogs. Open the cages to release the cute critters to the wild. Cute critters attack their rescuers.

Look for people with bitten ankles at hospitals and doctor offices.

Domestic terrorism. Whoever did this should be dealt with accordingly, and whatever group they belong to should be declared a criminal enterprise.

These types of crimes need to be taken more seriously. The perpetrators are possible future serial killers.

You gotta be kidding me. You own a Mink farm, it is you entire lively-hood; and you don’t have a security system (camera’s, motion detectors, security firm) etc.

If I owned a Mink Farm I’d have a 24/7 security guard.

‘Blaming the victim?’

For piss poor prior planning only. Its not like attacks of this type are ‘new’. Its been happening for decades. I can almost guarantee you this family business received numerous threats over the years.

The domestic terrorists that did this need to be brought to justice.

"This makes me sick and very angry. What is wrong with people these days?

These days? Paranoid, mentally unstable mentalities have always been around. The only difference between then and now, is that they have a political party which represents them. They have the ACLU watching their back and activist judges making sure that the laws on the books will not be enforced against them, but instead will "find" a right that allows the demented to run free while holding their victims responsible for the crimes against them.

The American people get the government they deserve. Let's just see how much longer they allow such perversions of justice to continue.

Until enough of us "we the people" wake up and see the need to take the mantle of responsibility the Framers bestowed on us when they gave us a "Republic", and call a halt to the madness, it will continue unabated.

And the way things look at the moment, it will get a lot worse before it gets better.

This incisive post is one of the reasons FR is a treasure for intelligent, educated people.

I don't think the subject of this thread can be addressed better or more to the point.

Since animal rights activists have gone after mink farms and killed pets on property before, I’ll guess it was them.

Funny how some don’t understand these militant “animal rights” freaks at all.

PETA kills loads of animals and gets caught dumping them in public dumpsters. “To save them”, they said.

Earth first freaks in Germany wanted to kill a baby bear because he was only alive because of human interference and they didn’t think that was right.

They are an evil lot and FReepers should never give them the benefit of the doubt as far as their treatment of animals is concerned. Like all liberals, they say one thing and do the opposite.

PETA?

Nah... PETA usually kills animals like these by simply releasing them. (Domesticated animals starve in the wild.) They normally reserve this kind of viciousness for humans.

Smashed cages..Intruders set loose nearly 2,800 minks... deaths of... 443 animals...severed the heads of sheepdog..and...beagle mix... by shooting...

Riiiiiight! And the owners sleptthrough all the carnage, chaos, and racket?!?!?!?!

Smells fishy, IMO. Rather like an insurance collection job.....
