The soldier son of talk radio relationship counselor Laura Schlessinger is under investigation for a graphic personal Web page that one Army official has called "repulsive." The MySpace page, publicly available until Friday when it disappeared from the Internet, included cartoon depictions of rape, murder, torture and child molestation; photographs of soldiers with guns in their mouths; a photograph of a bound and blindfolded detainee captioned "My Sweet Little Habib"; accounts of illicit drug use; and a blog entry headlined by a series of obscenities and racial epithets. The site is credited to and includes many photographs of Deryk Schlessinger, the 21-year-old son of the talk radio personality known simply as Dr. Laura. Broadcast locally on 570 KNRS, "Family Values Talk Radio," the former family counselor spends three hours daily taking calls and offering advice on morals, ethics and values. She broadcast a show from Fort Douglas, in Salt Lake City, last week.

I don’t think she is a phony, I think she was a bit of a wild child who grew up is all.
You don’t always find a person living the same life from birth till older age. She made a more conservative turn at some time in her life and seems to have been following that way of life for a long time.
Many people are different as kids.
Really? What does sure currently practice while preaching against it?
I have no idea. Maybe we will find out one day. But she certainly goes out of her way to either first deny, and when that fails, try to legally prevent exposure of anything she has done in the past. Just another self-promoting BS artist. But I suppose that if one uses the Jimmy Swaggert philosophy of life whatever you do is fine as long as AFTER you are caught you own up to it. But arguing is pointless. In the long run she is nothing more than entertainment with little credibility.
Just so you'll know, protecting one's privacy concerning things done in the past does not meet the definition of hypocrisy. That only applies if she's currently doing things that she privately condemns, you see.
Now that we've dispensed with that, how is she a phony?
Hey, I’ve got no problem if you can’t back up the accusations that you make.
Pity you aren’t a man, then you’d have to do so.
Going out on a limb here, but I am assuming you do know that personal attacks are not allowed. Good way to get yourself banned. And questioning ones manhood does qualify as a personal attack. But that is only my opinion, I will let a moderator give you his.
So, I guess your definition of a hypocrite is someone who ever improves themselves or changes their beliefs. That's pretty sad. You can honestly say to me you have never improved yourself or changed your beliefs? You believe the exact same thing you did when you were fifteen or twenty years old? Or do you consider yourself a hypocrite too?
lol. I think the funniest thing is that Vladmir Putin let a post. That is really funny.
...I’m always intrigued by people who choose to define a hypocrite as anybody who has ever learned a lesson from their mistakes. Especially if that person tries to share the pain of their lessons to prevent another person from having to go through what they did.
Joe,
come on if she would say something like “You know I used to dress like a slut and in my experience this happened and trust me you don’t want to go through that. It was not pleasant. I did not like myself back then. You need to really have a higher self exteme level for yourself....” Than I would think that your statement would be valid.
hypocrisy
noun
- The practice of professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not hold or possess; falseness.
- a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess
hypocrite
noun
- a person who professes beliefs and opinions that he or she does not hold in order to conceal his or her real feelings or motives
- a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs
Clearly neither of these definitions fit an individual with a past set of behaviors no longer part of their lives while professing newer values and behaviors. And in Dr. Laura's case behaviors that have not been part of her behavior for decades.
People who insist on calling Dr. Laura a hypocrite or accuse her of practicing hypocrisy simply don't know what the words mean.
Or they know what the words mean and know the words don't apply, but simply use them to attack someone they don't care for (to put it mildly).
What kind of people do respond to Dr. Laura? Read some of the letters to Dr. Laura and find out.
I go there every so often to remind myself how the culture war is going on a personal level for many folks - male and female alike. I especially liked the recent letter from a chaplin in Iraq.
It occurs to me those who bandy about the words hypocrisy and hypocrite would have a very difficult time with Moses in the OT and with Paul in the NT. Maybe not, maybe they have there own personal definitions they need to share with others.
FWIW - I am an admirer of Dr. Laura, as I am of almost anyone who has succeeded in spite of their past behaviors. I am a fan (lower case f) and have an appreciation for her directness - what some choose to call mean or mean spirited.
I have absolutely no problem with those who do not care for her or her brand of advice. There are plenty of those I don't care for either. However, I don't find it necessary to attack those I don't care for.
Having started with two more definitions, here are two more to end with ...
self-righteous
adjective
- having too high an opinion of one's own merits, and being intolerant of other people's faults.
holier-than-thou
adjective
Believing oneself to be morally superior; sanctimonious, often patronizingly so

So you are saying that someone who tells other women to be stay-at-home moms while she was not one herself is not a hypocrite? Do the math. She has been on the air since 96 according to her bio. Unless she was taking her son to work with her, someone else was watching him. Give me a break. When did she “change”? I will admit, its a great gig she has, and a good paycheck. But its only entertainment.
Actually, she tells the moms that it is better to be a stay at home mom until their child reaches school age and doesn't need to have mom at home all of the time.
And that's exactly what Dr. Laura did for her son so, no, once again she does not meet the definition of hypocrite.
Very well put and spot on!
‘So, I guess your definition of a hypocrite is someone who ever improves themselves or changes their beliefs. That’s pretty sad. You can honestly say to me you have never improved yourself or changed your beliefs? You believe the exact same thing you did when you were fifteen or twenty years old? Or do you consider yourself a hypocrite too?’
I don’t routinely berate those that make mistakes like this hypocrite does for cash and notoriety.
So no, I don’t consider myself a ‘hypocrite’.
And I don’t consider this woman an authority on any given topic, especially ‘how to act while young’.
‘And in Dr. Laura’s case behaviors that have not been part of her behavior for decades.’
Prove it.
No way.
You are the one who has to do the proving. You are the one accusing another of practicing hypocrisy and calling them a hypocrite. So you get prove it.
No more empty accusations. Prove it. And remember the definitions of hypocrite and of hypocrisy are out there (see below) so you can't just fling the words about.
hypocrisy
noun
- The practice of professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not hold or possess; falseness
hypocrite
noun - a person who professes beliefs and opinions that he or she does not hold in order to conceal his or her real feelings or motives
- a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs
About proving it ... Good luck. Dr. Laura haters have been looking for information to make your accusations and name calling stick for decades. All they have are her nude photos and living in sin for a number of years - before she got married, before she became a mother, before she ended up with what might be called conservative values.
That's it.
Heck, Paul (formerly Saul) used to hunt down Christians and have them killed ... then before you know it, he became a Christian. Then what do you know, he started acting as if he was a real Christian or something. Shucks, he even became an evangelical Christian. What do you make of that?
Hypocrite? Practicing hypocrisy? I guess so by your definition. Certainly not by mine. I guess it's strange how nothing in the NT has anyone calling him a hypocrite or telling him he couldn't preach the word as he used to persecute the followers of the word.
BTW - It's a shame you grew up around far too many rank hypocrites to be able to tell the difference between a hypocrite and someone who has changed their values and behavior. Must have been very close to home for there still to be so much anger.
So sad.
