It sounds like a DNS problem. You said that you know how to do a ping, so I assume that you can open a command line and enter commands. Do this:

Enter ipconfig /all

Look at the IP addresses of the DNS servers.

Try pinging them.

What do you get?

In the future, I would recommend SuperAntiSpyware. One of the best I've encountered. Not that AdAware and Spybot stink, but they're like sooooooooooooo 2004. :O)

Have you tried booting from a source disk? Or doing a “Go back”?

Even when she couldn’t get anywhere on the internet she could still send and receive E-mail. My tech didn’t even charge me for this as he said it was the first he had seen and learned somthing from it.

I had already tried updating Norton and it wouldn’t let me update. He said it was because they first hijacked Norton to get to my brouser.

Sorry to ask another question on a question thread, but...

When I type ipconfig /all at the CMD prompt, I get this:

“ipconfig is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.”

That’s a pretty serious problem, isn’t it? My internet has been slow as heck for weeks, but I thought the problem was the signal (I have satellite internet).

No matter what I type into the CMD prompt I get the whole “not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.”

Reinstall XP? I’d greatly appreciate any suggestion(s).

Thank you.

I agree with the post that thinks your browsers were hijacked.

Prior to reinstalling your OS, have you tried HijackThis (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html)?

Have you tried using the “go back” feature from XP? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03may19.mspx

I once had a similar problem, It seems the “hosts” file had several thousand additional links added to it, all pointing back to the originating machine, might search for the file and see if it’s gotten real huge, with a whole bunch of addys pointing to 127. (127=your local machine)

If it was working then, the harmful change is with another TSR. Try to uninstall Norton. You can reinstall it later, but it’s a TSR & if it’s been corrupted you probably won’t be able to uninstall it. The easiest way to test for that is by trying to uninstall it.

Is there anyway you can try to log on via phone line, using a 56K modem, just in order to try something like LSPFix and see if that fixes the problem?

Next test. (We're troubleshooting here...)

In your command line, try to ping a URL. FreeRepublic responds to pings, so ping www.freerepublic.com. Let me know what you get.

Do you know how to change your DNS servers? Change to 68.2.16.30 and 68.6.16.30 and see if that fixes things. Those are the DNS servers for Cox.net users, but anyone can use them and it will tell me if the problem is your DNS server or something wrong with your OS.

That's fine. But try to change your DNS server. Google.com may still be in your DNS resolver cache.

You can check to see what is still in your DNS resolver cache by going to a command line and typing ipconfig /displaydns. You can clear that cache (and test my theory) by typing ipconfig /flushdns. If I'm right, then you won't be able to bring up Google.com anymore.
