In a joint statement released today, Dell Inc. and Canonical Ltd. announced that Dell will now offer laptops and desktop computers pre-installed with Ubuntu Linux 7.04.
The computers will be sold via Dell's web site, said Canonical's director of operations Jane Silber. "We have worked with Dell to get Ubuntu fully supported and fully certified on Dell hardware," she said. "Ubuntu has the full endorsement of Dell."

You know, I don’t want Linux pre-loaded...I just want the option to buy a computer sans-OS, and load whatever the hell I want to on it, without paying the Microsoft tax. Linux users don’t need pre-loaded machines, as they tinker with their computers so much.
My home computer had an uptime of 33 days and didn’t boot in the entire month of March.
My question is, will it actually be cheaper than a Windows version? Dell gets paid to put a lot of crapware in a Windows system, cutting its costs quite a bit. What will the price of a Linux system be without all the crapware to drive it down?
BTW, Microsoft had to be forced to stop its monopolistic licensing practices in order to allow this. It used to be that Dell would have had to charge for a Windows license anyway for each Linux box shipped. It’s terms like this that killed OS/2.
It will be interesting to see bu even if it is at cost (equal to windows) you’re still getting the office suite and other such software. I really dont expect it would be more because im sure for every dollar they get paid to put something on their desktops they spend on license money to MS
It’s possible that it could only last 6 months. Linux is still relatively unknown. Though now is a good time because of Vista’s luke-warm reception.

That needs to change, otherwise you’ll never got photoshop-linux, tax programs-linux, or pick-your-favorite-game-linux.
Dell is only offering this up on a handful of machines, so I don’t think it’s going to be a 6 month thing. It may not last forever, but if the demand is there it’s there.
Knowing I could get a Dell laptop with linux certified hardware in it I’d definately make that one of my top choices if I had to go the route.

Probably not. Your point about crapware is true. Don’t forget that MS also throws dell and other OEMS monies that they won’t be getting from linux vendors.
I’d expect these to be similarly priced.
But don’t forget that you have to spend extra monies for security software as well. And spend extra monies yet again if you want something more than msworks.
Thus making a linux box cheaper. At least I’d think.........

Umm there is no way MS takes a net negative on the operating system sold with a Dell. Dell pays them for windows not the other way around.
They don't take a net negative. The idea, is that Microsoft charges Dell a reduced rate (actually, I think it is a constant price no matter how many desktops Dell actually charges; the joys of volume licensing). Then other third-party vendors pay Dell to include miscellaneous utilities or demos on the computer. So, Dell is able to turn a net profit on Windows because the price they are paid per system by the third parties is more than the the price per system paid to Microsoft.
Can you get Crossover Office 5? If so, you can use that to install iTunes 4.9...and when you install iTunes 4.9, it also installs Quicktime 6.
I think it is. Hopefully it will be better once it comes out of beta. If not, I’ll just use the built-in IRC in Opera 9 or download Kopete (the KDE-based chat tool).
