Cops: Ore. Man Puts Kids in Car Trunk

Police Say Ore. Man Put Kids in Car's Trunk for Family Vacation Because Car Was Too Small

PORTLAND, Ore. Apr 1, 2007 (AP)— An Oregon man on vacation with his family is accused of putting two of his four children in a car trunk because the vehicle was too small to hold all of them.

Douglas Willy, 40, was arrested Saturday after police received a tip from a person who saw the family at a gas station, authorities said. He was charged with two counts of reckless endangerment.

Willy, his fiancee and their four children were taking a trip but the vehicle did not fit all six passengers. So, police said, he decided two of the children would ride in the trunk to avoid taking a second vehicle.

Police said a 12-year-old and 13-year-old were in the trunk, and had been riding inside for about 20 miles.

The woman took the children home on Saturday. Authorities said Willy was released without bail Sunday.

A telephone message left Sunday at the Willy's home was not immediately returned.

I could so see my dad doing this. And we would have argued over who got to lay down in the trunk and who had to be packed up front with annoying adults.

That the discovery of the Minivan is still unknown among the savages of the extreme left coast wilderness of Oregon, comes as no surprise to anyone, but stuffing kids into the trunk of a car, by the descendent's of those same hippies who made the Volkswagen bus famous, is inexcusable!

What if the car had a fold down rear seat and it was open to the car interior? As long the the two kids could crawl out via the car interior what's wrong? I'm not saying that was the case in this situation but I'm not sure it would be much different than a station wagon for some cars.

If that were the case then it wouldn't be called a "trunk" of the car in the article.

It sounds like it was a small, compact car with a standard, enclosed trunk.  If it was as you describe it, then it wouldn't even be worthy as a news item.

If there hadn't been numerous cases of people dying in car trunks from the exhaust fumes leaking in then it probably wouldn't be quite as big of a deal.

And who hasn't done this before?

Putting children into a car trunk and closing the lid, and then going on a 20 mile trip?  Most sane people haven't.

If the lid had been open then it wouldn't even be a news story because it's not remarkable at all.

LOL! That was for six miles max, this, as far as the trunkees are concerned is the tour the USA, spare tire class trek.

I guess I needed to put the obligatory " : ) " for you after my comments.

Or would "/sarcasm" be better for you?

Considering that several people in the thread have already commented that 'it's no big deal', apparently thinking that the lid was open or that it was only for a short distance, your comment was entirely in keeping with those.

Differentiating your comment with some sort of indication that you understood the article would be nice for everybody, in order to convey your meaning better.  As it was, there was no reason why your comment shouldn't be lumped in among the others who thought that this was nothing more than kids riding in an open trunk down to the store.

Normally I find the 'sarcasm' tag unnecessary and redundant, but many here appear to be misreading the article and so clarity is nice   :-)

No hard feelings, I hope?  :-)

12 and 13 yrs. old is certainly old enough to call the cops themselves. If my parents had tried to put me in the trunk of a car at that age, that is exactly what I would have done.

One other point, how I wish that the MSM would quit calling these shack-up people formally elegant terms such as "fiancee". The idea that there is a marriage in the offing here is pretty ridiculous, given the charges. How many of the four kids are illegitimate? Now, there is a word that reporters need to blow the dust off of...

Agreed in principle, although since they were only discovered by a passersby when they stopped at a gas station, it could be because they were making noise inside the locked trunk and couldn't release themselves.

I agree that at 12 or 13 it would normally be a handful to get two kids into a tiny compact car's trunk, there might be abuse and violence involved with this.  We can only guess because of the shortness of the article.

Also agreed, although I won't hold my breath, given the decay of 'modern' society.

We used to ride in the little storage compartment behind the back seat in our little 60's VW bug.

I've owned two '60's vintage VW bugs, and I'm intimately familiar with that area.  It's completely open on the top and anybody back there could easily get out and into the rest of the car......it's completely different from being inside a closed car trunk of a tiny vehicle.  The area you refer to has no lid or closure of any kind.
