Animal Services officers in Melbourne, Fla., say a large dog completing in a local dog show suddenly attacked an elderly woman and nearly severed her foot.
The Akita, owned by Sally Jaffe, attacked Maria Patman, 70, during the competition Sunday at Wickham Park Pavilion, WKMG-TV, Orlando, reported Monday.
Capt. Bob Brown, spokesman for Brevard County Animal Services, said it was unclear why the dog suddenly attacked the woman and chewed on her ankle for several seconds.
"It's an odd occurrence. This breed is not known for the propensity to bite, but it's obviously an animal. That's the bottom line. Everyone has to make sure they are aware of that," Brown said.
Jaffe, who was not handling the dog at the time of the attack, was cited by animal control officers for a bite causing injury. The Akita is in animal control custody and its fate will be determined at a dangerous dog hearing in 10 days.

A "dangerous dog hearing?" Seriously?
"Cat attacks woman at dog show"
Now THAT would be a story...
Old lady without a King Cobra to protect her from the doggie Ping!!!
This guy sounds as sharp as a tack. The old lady probably thought it was a piano.
Who won? Did he place?
when good dogs go bad....woof!
He won best in "Oh my god please get it off of me."
Just wait until Hitlery is at the helm. Then we'll have "dangerous human thought" hearings.
For the common good, don'cha know.
the Akita be acquit
"It's an odd occurrence. This breed is not known for the propensity to bite"
Total nonsense. They're quite well-known for it. I've never myself heard of a story 2nd-hand, but I've heard 3rd-hand on places like this. And in the stats all the breed-legislation people on FR put up.
Never underestimate geese as "watchdogs". You will probably never be hauled into Judge Judy's court by someone complaining that your watch-critters "goosed" them.
Not only were they very alert and protective, it was fun watching people try to deal with them. All the insurance salesmen, encyclopedia salesmen, Jehovahs Witnesses, etc. pretty much how to react to a dog, but geese are a whole different thing.
When they see an intruder, day or night, they run while flapping their wings and although their bite is bad enough, they can whack the stuffings out of you with the knuckles of their wings....and they seem to enjoy it.
The geese "tolerated" our German Shepherd, but they also dominated the poor dog.
Bigtime nonsense:

Her sin was to step out to her car and open the door. The wasn't even hungry. Just a "friendly neighbor" who wanted to start out by showing dominance.
Just noting that with this sort of behavior available with dogs the cloning extremists in Korea now claim to have cloned a wolf.
Just what we need.
That poor dog got tired of being groped and manipulated and humiliated! Enough is Enough! The ankle-biting will now begin! AAAARRRRRRRGGGHHHHMMMM!!!
It's unusual that a presumably trained dog at a show would bite someone, but Akitas were bred to fight and guard. They are not particularly friendly to strangers and can be aggressive. They are not and were never meant to be cuddly dogs.
LOL at show dogs being "trained".
They are not. In fact, the standard line is that obedience will "break their spirits".
That doesn't mean, as most dogs, that they aren't naturally reasonable animals. But many are not disciplined except knowing by rote how to stand and trot IN the ring.
