Explanation: Brilliant Venus, a slender crescent Moon, and lights along the Ponte 25 de Abril glow against the western twilight in this lovely moonset scene from Lisbon, Portugal, recorded on March 20. In fact, such serene views were enjoyed across planet Earth this week, as the young Moon remained near the setting Sun following a partial solar eclipse, and Venus ruled as the evening star. Because of strong Earthshine - light from the sunlit Earth - even the Moon's night side is clearly visible in the picture. The Ponte 25 de Abril is a 2.3 kilometer long suspension bridge across the Tagus river, often compared to the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, USA.
Nice, but look how civilization's lights have blocked out the night sky.
I've been watching the moon an venus from here nightly.
Not keeping up on my astronomy while here in Germany. I wondered what the bright star was next to the Moon on Wednesday but I forgot to look it up. Nice to know.
It's been spectacular here also ... leaves you breathless.
We had one cloudless evening a few nights ago and I caught it through the trees. The moon was a very thin crescent. Sadly for me, it reminded me of a configuration before sunrise shortly after the attack of 9/11/01. I was living in NYC at that time and I remember remarking to a buddy, "I hope that's not a 'sign'."
Sorry if I'm being a bit of a downer, but I just can't seem to shake the impotent rage I still feel over the attack. Prolly take it to my grave.
Having a problem with a LunarPlanetary Imager camera.
Anyone familiar with these??????
I understand your sentiments completely. We were in Manhattan a couple of months after the horror and went to Ground Zero and the stench in the air and the memorials posted will stay with me forever. We will NEVER forget.
Well, it is twilight too... The sun has an effect on blocking out the stars...
