(CBS13) STOCKTON An amazing discovery was made in our own backyard as scientists found what they think is a meteorite the size of a small town!
While looking for oil, scientists say they found space dust and possibly a mammoth meteorite. The possible meteorite is buried deep in the ground about 10 miles west of Stockton in an area called Victoria Island.
Scientist believe the meteorite is buried nearly a mile beneath farmland. Three dimensional images show the circular crater created by the rock are estimated to be three miles wide. They say that this event occurred over 50 million years ago.
The impact would have been as powerful as 100,000 atomic bomb blasts and would have been seen and heard for hundreds of miles.
Scientists will return to the site to collect more samples. They hope to someday get a piece of the meteorite itself.
50 million years ago. Interesting.
Guess the meteor post-dates the demise of the dinosaurs, if they are correct.
I ain't diggin' it up!
Good point. However, I'm not sure about its value. Can it be mined, and is the material worth kerjillions?
Maybe we should change our minds?
The is one big space rock.
Could be an iron/nickel type, could have some value. Probably to expensive to dig up though.
Maybe the dust hasn't settled on this one yet.
I just hope there isn't more one the way soon.

At a mile deep (the top of it) it would be very expensive to mine.
A mile deep??? The obvious question; would this have been exposed landscape at the time of such an impact? Now covered by a mile of dirt. And we're finding dinosaur bones laying around on the ground??? I see...
Are you asking which came first ... the meteor or the dinosaur egg?
Something like that ;^)
If this is in fact an impact crater(with attached meteor), it raises a lot of questions, no?
I didn't find many other references to this news story yet ... only CBS ... and you know how we love CBS. [/groan]
But as time goes by, there may be more info. Stay tuned.
Missed this the first time...
