My Dragon Fly and Me
If I could be a Dragon Fly and wing my way through the sky I would never be shy just me and my Dragon Fly!
By moonlight we ride the wind chase the comets tail for fun by day we would hide from the sun our fragile wings would come undone
On darkest nights we would use fireflies as our guide we would dip and we would glide through the heavens open wide and scatter diamonds in the night sky my Dragon Fly and me...
And we would wing past our lovers silent in the night... to kiss their face in our flight much to their surprise and delight my Dragon Fly and me in sight...
Such a view do we share away up here in the air of breezes soft through our hair my Dragon Fly and me a pair...

Well I know everyone's in bed now (zzzzzzzz), but I just sent some emails to colleagues in Taiwan and I already have a potential job offer! Just took an exchange of 4 emails.
Well, I never thought I'd go back, especially not so quickly. But I don't think I can function in the US job market just now. I think I make too much of an impression (something I've never wanted to do), and our society, having become less mature, is filled with people who confuse a job interview with "their special power" which they'll use to directly compete with anyone who makes them feel small, which is anyone who's actually done something before.
That's ok, I don't need to be in America to love it. And when I come back I and buy my land, then I can stroll around the towns and enjoy them because I won't need to job hunt in this kind of childish environment. I bet on the East coast it's quite different, but here in the West there are some really immature places. I don't think I can beat the immaturity, it's eternally self-generating!
I don't have the job yet, but there are so many, and guess how much air fare is? Just $595 from the West coast to Taiwan! So cheap!
The good news is I can continue on my web presence uninterrupted, and when I come back it will be to my own independent fiefdom (that's a 4 or 5 acre fiefdom!).
Well I'll keep you posted, but if this first position works out I may be flying into Taipei by April!!! ;-)

Good moring Soaring Feather. Spring has sprung.
Spring has sprung.
The vernal equinox has arrived
and the thought of Spring can be contrived,
flower buds, grass begin to grow,
with watering and time it will require a mow,
wild animals are in the mood,
and it is much easier for them to find food,
because the snow has melted away,
due to bright sunshiny days,
humans rejoice at the springtime sights
as the temperature warms them to their delight,
swimming, tennis, surfing and boogie boarding are all go,
and there isnt a snowball anywhere to throw,
those with cabin fever can finally smile,
because great weather will be here for awhile.

I think I make too much of an impression (something I've never wanted to do), and our society, having become less mature, is filled with people who confuse a job interview with "their special power" which they'll use to directly compete with anyone who makes them feel small, which is anyone who's actually done something before. I have encountered a few of those. One can actually convert the experience into warm memories, because you can interpet them as a no-lose situation.
In one case, I took public transportation in Winter for an interview..Walking though slush to this horrid building. In the waiting area I heard through the door a loud complaint about how much salary applicants were demanding. Then came the hostile interview by a pompous clerk. I despised the place as soon as I entered, and knew it was a total loss, so when the salary discussion came about, I leaned back, put my feet on the guy's desk, and said, "OK, let's cut the crap; What are you offering for my former employer's Trade Secrets? OH, Yes..and that orange stairwell? It GOES!"
Needless to say the interview was rushed to an early close.
When I got outside I laughed all the way to the train station.
Shrug..It beats being bitter and resentful, and the jerk had a nice story to tell at dinner.
Another time, when things looked pointless, I said, "You may have noticed that resume was printed on Deckle Edge Strathmore laid Bond. They are quite expensive-give it back."
When I got to the parking lot, I felt my tailpipe..it was still warm.
I do not think they are used to this.
All that said, I have never been out of work very long.

Good morning everyone.

Hah ha ha ha, that's great. Yes I guess I was taking silly people too seriously. Thanks for the stories.
It's just that I've always worked through recruiters and I guess I wait for them to act, and that attracts a certain kind of passive aggressive personality.
The problem is, if I search for companies,
then search over their job openings,
then write a unique cover letter and resume for each one, that multiplies my work load by a factor of 10 over just having a recruiter send my stats around. Recruiters once worked well, but now they seem to have experienced a collapse in quality.
Here's a thread now,
Outsourcing's Uneven Impact (Different Cities Feel More or Less Pain) about outsourcing and how it's running quality down all over the place, I tell a long story about Amazon.com and how trashy a lot of their systems have become (Posts #5 and #7). I have one additional story about Qwest. And I've only been back in the country for 6 weeks! Qwest, Amazon, Recruiters, all have gone down in quality.
I guess I'll either have to do a company by company search and follow up myself, or go back to Taiwan for 5 years until I can buy my little farm I'm so looking forward to living on. I think I'm done with all forms of recruiter.
Thanks for the stories!

FWIW, Your Mileage May Vary, etc...I have never found a good match for a rewarding long term position though a recruiter because they have a vested interest in getting you placed/disposed of to get their fee or commission ASAP, and whether the match is good or bad is of no concern to them as long as the client remains employed through the probationary period.
I personally dislike being "Merchandise" unless I am the one doing the selling.
A Bad Word for them is "Pimps". They find a customer, you turn tricks, they take a cut, and move on to the next "Client" in their warehouse.

Well that's nice of you to say, but I think I would prefer to stay in the US. OTOH, the working dynamic is totally different in Asia, and I think I might be happier there, now anyway.
What I mean is, most jobs don't start till 10:00am, and I will live very close to work. This job I'm looking at now is an evening job, so it doesn't start till 4pm!! and only goes to 9pm. Teaching's hard work, but now that I'm back in the US, the prospect of an actual 8 hour shift seems crappy (see how spoiled I am now?).
And only working evenings I would have all morning to do lots of other things, like check out what income I could create through different kinds of writing. I actually think there's lots of things to do in that arena (technical, corporate, creative, what have you), and I could do that all day on the Internet (and post to FR!) while I wait to go teach.
BUT, I was kind of hoping to stay here, but I guess I'm not really doing anything so critical that I have to stay here, so might as well head back. I wasn't expecting to be unable to use recruiters, and looking for each job singly is more time and money than I planned on spending!
Well I guess this time I can learn truly fluent Chinese (as opposed to just conversational) that should make things interesting!

I think you needed the break to touch base in the USA.
The work hours sound great don't they? I used to work at jobs where check in time was any where from 6am to 7am. Makes for a long day especially in winter months sloshing around in the cold and snow. You don't have to deal with that kind of weather in Taiwan.
You do like living and working there, or you would not have stayed there for so many years.
It's gonna work out fine.

Well that's for sure. I think I'll come back at least every other year, or since the airfare is only $595, I'm sure I'll come back each year. I can spend the visits driving around and picking out plots of land! ;-)

They have found the lost boy in NC. YAY, he is walking out by himself.

Did you see the movie, "Christmas Story", where the boy wanted a Red Rider Rifle that shoots BBs?
It's a hilarious movie and the lamp is from that.

Once a day and sometimes more I look out my day dream door To see if spring is out there yet I'm really anxious, but mustn't fret.
I see the snow a melting down and lots of mud and slush around I know the grass will surely sprout and birds and flowers will come about.
But why oh why does it take so long? I'm sure the calendar can't be wrong. Sunshine fills my heart with cheer I wish that spring were really here.
Soon mother nature will sound the alarm Wake up! get dressed, turn on your charm Winter's gloom has gone its way It's Spring! It's Spring! Oh Happy Day!
