I wonder if Howie is worried that there is no bail in the Bahamas for a murder charge which means he’ll sit in their ever so nice Fox Hill Prison until his trial if charged with murder. I hear you get a slop bucket to use for a restroom that they are supposed to empty once a day but forget to do. The smell shouldn’t bother him. The hotel room he “slept” in at the HR didn’t seem to bother him enough to clean it up! Ferk Howie!

D Shane gibson (PLP)

He was there before and he is hoping to go back again.

The Progressive Liberal Party's candidate for Golden Gates is the former Minister of Housing D Shane Gibson.

He needs no introduction to the people of The Bahamas or Golden Gates having represented the area for the last five years, after defeating the Free National Movement's candidate Theresa Moxey-Ingraham in the 2002 general elections.

Now, Gibson is gearing up for another battle to hold on to the seat two political newcomers are seeking to wrestle away from him. But, Mr Gibson is no stranger to a good fight having led one of the country's stronger labor organizations - the Bahamas Communications Public Officers Union - as well as venturing into politics. He is used to not having things come to him easy.

A good fight, he says he is prepared for, and if the words of Golden Gates residents are to be believed, Mr Gibson says he is set to recapture the 'golden' seat.

"I am campaigning on my record of achievement in Golden Gates, and the Ministries of Housing and Immigration," said a confident Mr Gibson. "My record in Housing speaks for itself in terms of the level of efficiency and productivity. The kind of energy that was brought to Housing was unprecedented. If you look at any previous government and what we have been able to achieve in Immigration in the short time that I was there, I think that speaks for itself."

Additionally, he said, in Golden Gates nobody can question the successes achieved there. From job placements, to establishing a marching band and computer lab to the start of an after-school program and allegedly negotiating contracts for residents to maintain the parks, Mr Gibson has made his presence felt.

"We were able to put in place a recognition program for mothers and fathers in Golden Gates, and we were able to establish a Crime Watch and Senior Citizens Association. All of these things in five short years," he boasted.

A former Minister of Labor and Immigration, Mr Gibson describes himself as a people's person.

As it relates to future plans for the area, the outspoken representative intends to build a multi-purpose gym that would serve as a social gathering spot for the residents.

"We are looking to build on the programs we started already. I will continue giving the people the kind of representation they have become accustomed to over the last five years."

Mr Gibson's main goal however, is to empower the people of Golden Gates.

Mr Gibson has three children and is married to Jacquelyn, a minister at Mt Tabor Full Gospel.

No word yet on father’s identity

The question of who fathered Anna Nicole Smith’s six-month-old daughter, Dannielynn, is still not answered today even after attorneys for the involved parties met Tuesday to discuss the details of a DNA test.

However, the results are expected to be revealed in an April 10 hearing when all the major players in the court case - Smith’s companion and the man listed as the father on the birth certificate, Howard K Stern; her mother, Virgie Arthur; and the man who claims to be the biological father of her baby, Larry Birkhead - will be represented in the courtroom. At yesterday’s proceedings, Ms Arthur made an appearance in the courtroom, but she declined comment on the court matter saying: “I know ya’ll want to know and I want to tell everybody but I can’t. Ya’ll all pray for me and my grand baby.”

The Bahamian attorney for Mr Birkhead, Emerick Knowles, told a group of reporters at the courthouse that he could not confirm whether his client would be present at Tuesday’s court proceedings and he admitted that he was not at liberty to say if the DNA results would be revealed then.

A gag was placed on the parties involved from the start of the case when a judge ordered that DNA be taken from Dannielynn and Mr Birkhead to determine who is her real father.

Tuesday’s proceedings were allowed to go forward after an appeal against DNA testing for the paternity of Dannielynn was withdrawn in the Court of Appeal Monday.

Mr Stern’s lawyer Damien Gomez said that after the withdrawal was made Mr Stern remained “stoically confident that he will prevail”. He would not comment upon the likelihood that further action would be taken in the appeal against DNA testing.

“This evening after I’ve spoken with Mr Stern and we find out what’s going on we’ll be able to make a determination,” he said as he entered the courtroom yesterday.

Mr Gomez reportedly made the withdrawal after a Justice of Appeal pointed out that one of two summonses requesting DNA testing be conducted on Dannielynn and Mr Birkhead had been filed by attorneys for Stern on March 19.

In the courtroom, the Justices said that Birkhead’s attorneys made the other request for the DNA testing five days before Stern’s summons and that the only difference between the two was that Stern asked for the testing to be conducted by Dr Louis Lsas and Birkhead had requested Dr Michael Baird.

Ms Arthur’s attorney, Debra Rose would only say: “The Bahamian public has been extremely supportive in their thoughts, their prayers, their letters and their e-mail and everything that’s coming to [Ms. Arthur], so we just want to publicly thank them for their support.”
