Milan, Italy - An Italian teacher has been suspended by her school in Milan after cutting off the tongue of a lively seven-year-old child with a pair of scissors, daily Corriere della Sera reported on Tuesday.

The boy has since had his tongue stitched back but is afraid to go back to school. His parents say he suffers nightmares and runs away whenever he sees a knife. They are now suing the school for damages.

The incident took place a week ago but was only reported on Tuesday.

According to Corriere, the 22-year-old substitute teacher threatened the child twice with a pair of scissors before actually chopping it off.

"Pull out your tongue. I'll cut it, and you'll no longer talk," she was quoted as telling the child.

The teacher, who has only been identified by her initials RS, has since apologised, claiming it was an accident.

The school's principal, Anna Maria Dominici, has suspended the teacher and ordered an investigation, saying her conduct could in no way be excused.

After googling for some more information, it looks like the story is wildly exaggerated. The teacher only cut the boy's tongue. It wasn't cut off at all. It required five stitches but was still attached. <Emily Litella voice> Never mind. </Emily Litella voice>

Whether it was purposeful or accidental and whether the tongue was cut off or only cut, there still has to be some criminal charge here.

What on earth is wrong with Italy these days? A fortnight ago, it was a cruel, barbaric, forced abortion on an unwilling would-have-been mother, and now, this?!!

The tongue is a highly complex body part. If she severed off a few branches of nerves, then that tongue is disabled for good, even if the wound heals.

Words fail me. What an atrocity.

Fired? That's all? Shouldn't she be put in jail for the rest of her life?

Honestly, the more I hear of stuff like this, the more I understand the value of *an eye for an eye*. Raised in a culture that pracitces such would ensure that you are aware of the consquences of all your actions. No surprises and I'll bet it would teach a lot of self-control.

I agree with your assessment but brat or not, there are some lines an adult should not cross.

If this would have been a male teacher doing it to a girl...

He would be in jail right now!

The teacher only cut the boy's tongue.

Like that's better? It's OK with you because she only cut the boys tongue?

The fact that she did it is the issue regardless of the level of harm she caused. It's irrelevant whether the tongue was severed or not. She could have very easily done more than she intended. She should not have touched that kid with the intent to harm. That was assault at the very least.
