Why aren't the parents in court also? They may not have known how old he is, but they DO know their daughter's age!
Something not quite right in the girl's head, either; but that needs treatment, not punishment.

Fry him.
Haven't decided what to do about the parents yet, but they really shouldn't be parents.

The girl's parents should have figured out this guy was too old for their daughter when he drove himself to their house.

her parents, who apparently believed he was much younger . . . The girl's parents apparently consented to the trip because they believed Hakmiller wanted to introduce the girl to his familyOkay, let's see here. The parents thought he was "much younger", the implication being that they thought he was of an age that wasn't inappropriate for dating a 12 year old girl. Then they let him take her on a "trip" that they apparently realized wasn't just down the block for a few hours.
Do you suppose anyone has asked these parents (to use the term very loosely) just what age range they think fits both requirements? I mean I went on a "date" to a party when I was 12, but the boy was also 12, and his parents were driving.
The rest of the story is even more bizarre. Don't settle for just the excerpt.

"41-year-old Redding man says 12-year-old was his girlfriend"
I can't recall if it was on "America's Most Wanted" or some other
crime show....but Redding was reported as a "hot-spot" for paroled
sex-offenders.
The idea of pedophilia and other perversion in Redding doesn't
suprise me.

Yes, what all of you said.
There's something else important here, though.
This man "fell in love" with the girl when he thought she was 19 and chose to remain in the relationship after learning she's only twelve. Bad decision. Stupid decision. Immoral decision.
However...
After putting himself in a legally vulnerable position by escalating this to a sexual relationship he put himself at even greater legal risk by calling the police to report that he believes she's been raped in her home.
Whatever the imbalances and wrong-doing in this situation, it's highly possible that he cares what happens to this girl and that she's given him reason to think that she's been the victim of incest in her home.
The parents should be investigated under a very powerful microscope.
