According to newly revealed information, Dell customers are wanting Linux pre-installed on their notebooks and desktop PCs. In fact, it is one of the most requested features from this leading PC manufacturer; having the ability to multi-boot into Windows XP or Windows Vista or no Microsoft partition at all are among the options. More information is available at Dell Idea Storm.

Looks like the argument of "OEMs aren't in the business of creating demand(a market) is over". The market itself is demanding it.

The flood gates are about to be opened for the benefit of us all.

"Dell Users Want Linux"

So how come Dell stopped selling desktop Linux PC's a few years back due to low demand then?
And if there is such a "huge" demand for Linux desktops how come Linux desktop sales are so low ?
Walmart(the world's biggest retailer by far) has been selling Linux desktops for years, nd still Linux desktop sales continue to be insignificant.

Tax nuthin'. A tax is something everyone has to pay (even if indirectly) from their income by order of the government.
By contrast, you are free to buy a computer with any operating system you want. Walmart sells plenty of Linux PC's

Yeah, I know. There are several vendors out there who offer it.

However, getting linux offered and preinstalled on a tier-one supplier is an important step.

As years go bye, things do sometimes change.

^^^^^^^^^^And if there is such a "huge" demand for Linux desktops how come Linux desktop sales are so low ?^^^^^^^^^^

Huge is your word, not mine. I don't remember seeing it in any of the links either. It may be the #1 demand, but that doesn't mean that it's by any means huge.

^^^^^^^^^^Walmart(the world's biggest retailer by far) has been selling Linux desktops for years, nd still Linux desktop sales continue to be insignificant.^^^^^^^^^

Realistically speaking, so is Apple's. a 2-5% share isn't exactly the kind of thing that dreams are made of.

It's an accurate label if one is referring to Dell, where no alternative is currently offered. That may very well change though.

Dell is not the only firm selling computers in this country. You can buy computers from Apple, Walmart etc.
It's an inaccurate label no matter how you look at it.
That fact that you can't buy KFC fried chicken from Burger King doesn't mean you pay "taxes" when you buy fried chicken from KFC.

I appologize for my poorly worded statement.

It's an accurate label if one is referring to Dell, where no alternative is currently offered at Dell.

Two words make a huge difference.

The word tax very much applies here. Look at how MS has set up their business. They run it very similar to how a government would. Monopolize everything, strong arm competition out, make everybody dependent on you, charge a superior price for an inferior product, the charged price is more often than not an underhanded one(a tax)......

The Democrats will probably push for some PC tax (similar to the UK's BBC TV tax) to fund some Democratic pet project.

I want one!

I need a laptop and I do NOT want Vista.

I have an old copy of XP that I can load on one as well.

Why charge me an extra $100 for Microsoft crap?
