SCO Vs. Blogger (Groklaw subpoenaed)
Forbes.com (excerpt) ^ | February 13, 2007 | Daniel Lyons

Excerpt -

For three and a half years, a blogger named Pamela Jones has led a relentless online crusade against software maker SCO Group, posting thousands of articles bashing the company for suing IBM over the Linux operating system.

Now the Lindon, Utah, software company is fighting back by seeking to take a deposition from Jones. Just one problem: They can't find her.

SCO tried last week to serve a subpoena to Jones at a house in Darien, Conn., where they believe she's been living, but the attempt was unsuccessful, according to a person close to the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Why would SCO want to depose Jones? SCO officials declined to comment about the matter. But in the past, company officials have said that Jones and her blog, called "Groklaw," were acting as a front for IBM -- an assertion they may hope to prove in a legal setting.

Jones also has criticized some journalists who cover the lawsuits, including this reporter, accusing them of being biased in favor of SCO.

"Hikers have also criticized some forest animals, including bears, accusing them of leaving piles of feces."

Is that the address that Maureen O'Gara dug up when she went on her personal manhunt against PJ? So which way did it go? At the height of Groklaw embarrassing SCO with the facts, SCO said they had people looking into who she was. Then shortly afterwards O'Gara comes up with all this information, which she published in a disgusting personal attack article. So did SCO dig it up and give to O'Gara hoping to discredit PJ/Groklaw, or did O'Gara dig it up and give to SCO hoping to have juicy access for the favor?

I any case, I can't see this subpoena surviving getting quashed by PJ. It has no bearing on the case. PJ has no special access (as seen by her repeated requests for people to get her documents) and no knowledge other than what the general public has. And there's no way she's an IBM front, since I doubt they hire ideological OSS loonies.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. O'Gara crossed the line from reporting to stalking.

Apparently PJ got word from one of the attorneys before the process server arrived. That's a good thing, but now she can't go home. Darl's henchman probably have a stakeout on her apartment.

The author of this article, Daniel Lyons, is one of those reporters she's nailed for bias and inaccuracy before. PJ is biased for OSS, she admits it. But the other reporters don't admit their bias, just show it in almost every article.

On the plus side for PJ pretty soon SCO wont have the money to pay anyone to stake out her home ;)...

In all seriousness she should just go face the music and make an even bigger joke out of SCO for trying to intimidate anyone who speaks out..

Then why can't they find her. She has been running that site on servers donated by IBM to some college.

I think O'Gara reported she lived 5 minutes from IBM's headquarters in New York.

now she can't go home.

She said she's sick. Is that not the case?

Trying to bring up old discredited attacks? Long ago there was an Internet service run by UNC Chapel Hill called SunSITE (named because of initial funding grants from Sun), which became one of the first sites on the new WWW. That eventually morphed into iBiblio, which now hosts a lot of projects for a lot of people for free. Oh yeah, to your point, along the way IBM also donated some servers to UNC Chapel Hill for the project, along with donations to a lot of other schools.

Now what's this insinuated PJ/IBM connection again? Because Groklaw runs on iBiblio?

You didn't discredit that, nor has anyone at Jokelaw been able to that I know of.

It takes a front to know a front, so you actually have credibility on this issue, GE.

Say hi to Bill for me at the water cooler tomorrow. Tell him I said he should fire Balmer.

Darien is an easy drive to Armonk, but it is considerably more than five minutes. It is a pretty expensive place to live, roughly the equivalent of the "greens" on the Monopoly board.

Yes, we did. Claims that she has some connection to IBM because of iBiblio are as ludicrous as claiming Project Gutenberg has the same connection. That service existed on Sun hardware long before IBM's contribution, and it'll exist afterwards. Project Gutenberg started in the 70s running on a Xerox mainframe, but now it's hosted - oh the horror -- on IBM servers at UNC Chapel Hill, along with over a thousand other sites.

This is just a lame attempt by SCO supporters to discredit Groklaw since they can't argue with the solid documentation posted there that severely injures SCO.

Everything I'm reading including from your favorite foreign rags is the longer she hides out the more credibility the theory she (he? they?) works for IBM gets. A simple affidavit should be the least she's willing to offer.

So a blogger wanting to remain anonymous automatically makes him suspect? Your beloved Daniel Lyons tried as hard as he could to dig up any connection, and failed. A person shouldn't have to waste his time contradicting unfounded accusations, although PJ already has.

A simple affidavit should be the least she's willing to offer.

Why should she bother? IBM already stated in court that there is no connection. PJ has already stated that there is no connection.

SCO could be right, but for now there is absolutely ZERO evidence showing an influential connection between Groklaw and IBM. SCO and its supporters simply do not like the hard, and very damning, facts that appear on Groklaw.

The collective effort over there has dug up some interesting stuff, showing how the actual history contradicts not only SCO's public statements, but SCO's legal filings too (isn't that perjury?).

Bother? LMAO you'd think she'd relish the chance to actually prove them wrong rather than just claim it. Instead it looks like she ran to the hills to hide. If she is actually sick and it's just an amazing coincidence, I wish her a speedy recovery.
