Autism rate about 1 in 150, higher than previous estimates

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- About one in 150 American children has autism, an urgent public health concern, said U.S. health officials Thursday who reported on the largest study done so far on the troubling disorder. The new numbers, based on 2002 data from 14 states, are higher than previously reported. Advocates said the study provides a sad new understanding of how common autism is, and should fuel efforts to get the government to spend hundreds of millions of additional dollars for autism research and services.

What are they talking about, autism is a 'public health concern'? As if autism is a disease or something!

What ever happened to the idea that this was caused by the shots given to kids? Was this ever proven?

No, CDC says there is no link whatsoever.

Most of us paranoid parents are unconvinced.

It sure seems like SOMETHING happened about 15 years ago to cause the spike.

Nope, the government says it's not true.

Most vaccines have no thimerosal.

some people theorized ... thimersol (a mercury preservative) is a possible culprit ...

it is probably a multi-faceted disorder ... all autistics are the same ... maybe a percentage of the population has immune system defiencies where the levels of thimersol in vaccines (and maybe in concert with other stuff) cause damage ...

in others in maybe a gene thing ...

in others ... who knows ... it seems like multiple different problems ... the rate is rising at an alarming rate ... how will society handle this when all these kids become adults ...

i post this from a personal concern.!

It's the answer most likely to be true. Think about it. Many people with Asperger's (a form of autism) are extremely intelligent. So either government shots cause extremely high intelligence, or they affect people like that, at a disproportionally high rate. Neither explanation makes any sense.

Autism diagnosis - Just another example of unaccountable entities deciding what is normal and what is not. It's the same crap diagnosis as ADHD.

Thomas Edison was autistic using current diagnostic criteria - would you have wanted him treated and medicated ? Same with Bill Gates and most identifiable geniuses in history. We are defining gifted people out of normalcy and medicating them into mediocrity.

Thomas Sowell's son didn't start speaking until age 4 or so - then he was identified as having a genius level IQ. It turns out there are quite a few kids like this; they feel no need to speak until later in life because their brain is too busy with other things.

Yes, there are those individuals who cannot function in society as it is structured and who need help. This does not mean, however, that it is as pervasive as the so-called professionals would like you to believe, nor that drugs and interventionist therapies are needed in every instance.

Follow the money, folks... when a profession sees a way to push the gov't into using tax money to fund this type of care, there is no end to the stream of people who "need" services for conditions that are in part not a problem.

Improvements in diagnosis were made 25, 30 years ago. Why the huge spike in the 1990s?

Uhm, that had nothing to do with some people's charge that there is some sort of government conspiracy to give kids autism. The facts that I stated prove that it is probably something a child is born with, and not caused by vaccines. And please don't lecture me about autism, I have Asperger's myself and I know how difficult it is to communicate with other people.
