Some South Jersey Parents Upset About Award-Winning Diversity Video Being Shown In School
Millennium Radio New Jersey ^ | Thursday, January 25, 2007 | David Matthau

Some parents in a South Jersey school district are upset that 3rd graders were shown an award winning diversity video about families - that includes same-sex couples in the story.

The Evesham school district - along with several others around the State - is using a video, called "That's a Family" in their health classes.

John Zlock, a spokesman for the Jersey Department of Education, says each district makes its own decision about whether or not to use the video, but the States core curriculum content standards require "as early as grade 2, that children should be able to identify different kinds of families, and explain that families may differ for many reasons."

He says "it's important for children to learn just how diverse a family can be…and we all know that living in New Jersey, it's a very diverse State, and children should be able to have those discussions."

Steven Goldstein, the Chairman of the group Garden State Equality, says he's shocked that anyone would have a problem with this video, because it has won several awards and "it was shown at the White House in 2000- before educators and child advocates from across the country who praised the film."

He adds if people don't feel comfortable with having their kids see That's a Family, "maybe New Jersey is not the right place for them."

Several calls to the Evesham school district were not answered.

The brain-washing of your young children continues at schools all over the country. The mission is to undermine the moral teachings of the parents and the church. What are you going to do about it?

>>>You can request that your child not see it. Or you can chose to have them stay home the day its shown.

I do see this isn't in the article; but it had wide radio coverage today. The families were not notified first. The parents weren't given a choice to opt out.

The definition stands. People's feeling don't enter into it.

If something doesn't meet the definition, ....

The definition does allow for the loss of individuals in the family to various circumstances.

You don't have to show a name change from maiden to married.

I just got the phone with my school principle. She said she never heard of the film, but she took all the information about Garden State Equality, Steven Goldstein and "That's a Family" . I read her the article . She told me that if it comes to our district she will call me....Parents do have the right to say no to their child seeing the film. All films on sex ed and even the DARE films must have parental approval.... She was very nice and concerned. She was very careful in her wording but I got the feeling she was concerned about this film and won't just let it be shown without permission slips from parents. So far she is not aware of our school district using it or planning to use it.

Garden State Equality didn't invent activism for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex civil rights in New Jersey, to be sure. But opinion leaders credit the organization with reinventing that activism dramatically. In two short years, Garden State Equality has amassed more than 14,000 members, more than 30,000 news stories, and has created a revolutionary model for grassroots action that has succeeded in passing landmark laws at a near-breathless pace.

Intersex? Wait, maybe I don't want to know.

I am very involved with that school. I joined the PTA and I am on the committee that represents our school at the board of Ed meetings. If I have to bring it up there I will. Now I am calling parents. I don't know of any parent that want their child taught this stuff.....I am still psst that we put McGreevey's picture up. We should have just named his favorite rest stop for meeting men in his name. At least that would have been more appropriate since he used them so much.

I have a headache now. I can see its going to get much worse. If it comes down to it I am going to talk with my neighborhood parents about joint homeschooling. So far each mother I have talked to is up in arms. I imagine my daughter's school is getting calls already.

It's all part of the whole Western push to change society to accept their own perversions as normal.
Not much different from the UK government demanding that the Catholic adoption agencies accept homo couples as parents.

Thanks....She has given me info as have many other people here..I just don't know if I am ready to do it. My child loves her school and so far I can deal with them.....How they will like dealing with me or my husband on matters like this remains to be seen..... I have had so many phone calls since you posted this that its amazing. Parents are very upset. I sent emails out and added the link to that website. The school should leave it to the parents to teach about gay families. I also think if a school wants to show a film on this type of issue the parents ought to able to view it 1st.

Gee...what a surprise. And just who was President in 2000?

Oh yeah, that's right...
