FR Folding@Home Project Update - We're Now #57 of all teams with 17,000,000 Points
PANDE GROUP, CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT, STANFORD UNIVERSITY ^ | 12/23/2006 | Stanford University

Posted on 12/23/2006 12:24:32 PM PST by texas booster

Merry Christmas to all of the folders among the ranks of Free Republic!

We have reached #57 on the list of teams worldwide, 3 FReepers are in the Top 1,000 of all folders and we are stomping the bejebers out of the DUmmies and Daily Kos.

A year ago we were just beginning to expand. Now we have about 170 regular contributors with nearly 1,050 computers using F@H as their screensaver.

Folding@Home makes a real difference in basic research into such diseases as Alheimer's, Parkinson's and BSE.

All it takes is a little free time to download the core, which runs in the background. Safe, clean and effective!

Your protein will finish New Years Eve (party!) and you will gain 385 points.

Here is what the villin protein looks like:

Kinda cute, for a protein.

Notice how curly the protein is? All proteins are rolled up inside the cell and must be uncurled to actually do anything. Stanford is doing detailed studies of this folding and unfolding, usually in the presense of water, sometimes with urea or or other molecules.

It is when these protein do NOT fold correctly that diseases can be manifested.

For the last couple days my folding@home protein says "Could not connect to Work Server." My husband is connected on two other computers and his says the same. Is this a problem with our computers or is everyone else getting the same message? It has been working well up until a couple days ago when my protein finished.

Are you using the GUI client or the Console? Do all three boxes have team 36120 and name "mschalock"?

The most common problem is that the client has "Use IE Settings". Make sure that that box is unchecked.

Also, if you have upgraded to IE 7 then consider IE 7 evil. Make sure that the client is not using IE Settings or a proxy.

One work unit was uploaded (p2124) to server 171.65.103.160 last Wednesday. Which computer could that be, and what do the logs say?

Thanks. Shoot, there must be a large group of p3301 and they gave them all to me. I've got two more. My numbers will never go up if I keep getting 47 pointers. Oh well, luck of the draw I guess.

Lately most of my WUs have been 20K frame units, with some up to 50K. Today the new one is 25 frames. Hmmm

As always, thanks for the ping!

I'm home for the celebration of Our Lord's birth, so I pulled "Big Unit" out of the truck and added it back. :) She already gave us 130 points in less than 8 hours, not bad for laptop.

Coming up on my one year anniversary in about 4 days, I'll have over 78k by then. I'm now in 16960th place!

Thanks ever so much, Texas Booster, for inviting me and allowing me to be a part of something so great this year.

In case I get busy and don't post on Christmas...

Merry Christmas to you and yours! (that's for ALL FReepers, especially the folders)

Here is a screen shot of what our team looked like on 11/28/06, right after my first WU posted.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I would dare say, our progress is a testimony to the power of the wonderful people on FR.

p3301: These projects take advantage of the double precision core FahCore_79.exe. They examine the interaction of small molecules with the ribosome, using an explicit water model.

Doesn't that make you feel better now that you know what your baby is doing?

These are small cores (even if they are modeling 24,802 molecules) and should only take 5 to 8 hours.

If you or one of your talented family has time, ping Egon and get his monitor installed. He is a very good programmer and it will watch your systems for you.

Mail at ya!

It looks like you are getting bunches of small WUs. You'll get a big'un, then pop out 47 pointers every couple of hours.

Do you only have one machine crunching on these? Must be a nice system.

Woohoo!! 48 points!

That screenshot was from the days when I used one name unique name for each system. If one stopped reporting I could go over and reboot the system.

From 48 points to 200,000 in just over a year. you have done quite well!

Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thanks for the invite many moons ago. Thanks for all your (and others) hard work on this program. I'd name them all but, alas, I've had too much eggnog this night.
