The 20 Most Overrated Movies of All Time
Premiere Magazine ^ | December 12, 2006 | various

Posted on 12/13/2006 5:40:45 PM PST by EveningStar

It happens to everyone who loves movies: You're in a conversation at a bar, or at a wedding, or online, and someone begins rhapsodizing about one of their favorite movies and you can't help but say, "Uh, that movie sucks. It's totally overrated." How two perfectly well-balanced individuals can have such drastically different views of the same film is one of the great wonders of being a film fanatic. It happens to us at Premiere all the time, enough so that sometimes we find ourselves questioning who we work with (boy, did it get ugly here when Love, Actually came out, and some of us are still snickering over our boss's love for Bowfinger, not to mention his affection for The Last Samurai). Well, we decided to let our staff go at each other regarding some of the more beloved movies of all time, and, sure enough, sobbing can still be heard coming from the bathroom stalls. Relationships have been strained. Egos bruised. Consider this a film lovers' quarrel, an admittedly rabid one.

Everything by Woody Allen.

Let's not forget "Valley of the Dolls"

Russ Myer's opus generated a total new genre.

The worst movie ever made that has any actual fans is 'Silent Running'.

I saw it the other day at a friends house and I now have Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome. My life will never be the same.

You don't like Rudy or Hoosiers? sheesh you have issues hating Indiana... I see that being a OSU fan has messed those movies up for you.

And Roger Ebert wrote it.

Consider yourself very lucky.
Also, Gangs of New York was very overrated.

Shane (I hate every wuss in that town. "Shane, come back and fight our battles for us Shane! We'll be waiting right here outside!")

What????!!! You can't be talking about "Shane"! That's one of my favorite movies. I don't understand how you can say everyone in that town is a wuss. You've got Stonewall, who gets shot because he goes into town on his own, doesn't even wait to go with the others, and gets into the fatal duel. As for Joe Starrett, he tells Shane this "isn't your fight" and has to be knocked unconscious in order for Shane to go to town in his place. So I protest!

I am happy, though, to see that I am not alone in hating the movie "Rudy." I also vote for "Good Will Hunting" and "Scent of a Woman" as very overrated.

I'm going to be sorry I asked but what's wrong with The Godfather?

I thought it was boring. I didn't find any of the characters particularly sympathetic, and it just dragged on and on. Al Pacino's exile in Sicily was sort of interesting, but the scenes in America put me to sleep. Lovely cinematography, but not "best movie of all time" material.

I saw it when it first came out. I thought it stunk then but I'd be interested in seeing it now.

Just from your partial list, Forrest Gump was extraordinary, and a Conservative film at heart. Rush discussed this for several days. And Gone With The Wind is one of the ten best ever, if not one of the top five. Consider the innovative filmmaking it took, especially for its time, to film the burning of Atlanta, and the wide shot of all the wounded and dead soldiers when Scarlett tries to get the doctor to go with her. To say nothing of translating an epic book that everyone had read, a wildly popular book, to the screen, accurately and brilliantly.

I agree about some of them. American Beauty, Good Will Hunting, Field of Dreams, Moonstruck...but Chicago was GREAT. The best movie musical since Cabaret.

I know I'm going to get zotted on this suggestion, but this is personal choice, right?

"Patton" was overrated. Also "Five Easy Pieces", the movie "Patton" beat out that year for Best Picture. That was a bad year for movies IMO.

One more for the road - "Green Berets".

I'm through post 67, and I've seen no mention of that flick:
"blah,blah "Green Tomatoes", blah, blah!

What a total waste of oxygen!
