Oh Holy God!
Just because a movie is good or enjoyable doesn't mean it isn't over rated.
I think probably A Christmas Story is the most over rated on my list and the one I haven't been able to enjoy on any level.
Except to include it on an over rated list.
I'd count Gump among my Top 5 of all-time but I can understand why others wouldn't. While it is common-place now, the use of dead historical figures appearing to interact with "live" movie characters was groundbreaking at the time.
Many said Gump, while depicted as a moron, was popular because he espoused conservative values at a time when we were dealing with the Clinton Gang and liberalism creep everywhere. He stood by his girl, right or wrong, even when she tried to rebuff him. He won a Medal of Honor in Vietnam for saving men in battle, etc.
The whirlwind of events that Gump found himself in constantly reflected the whirlwind most baby boomers in the U.S. dealt with from Elvis to AIDS, illustrating the silliness of our pop culture (ping pong diplomacy and the jogging craze, for example) and the constant array of changes we adjusted to.
For me, personally, what moved it beyond comedy and social commentary was the storyline of Forrest and Jenny. Jenny blew with every new wind that was out there (sex, drugs, hippie life, etc.) and continued to reject Forrest as a moron while he waited steadfastly for her. When she finally consented to building a life with him, she was stricken ill and died. Anyone who has waited for someone they loved and then lost them all too soon would start crying, as I did.
This is probably more than you wanted to know but that is why I rate it so highly. It was comedy, drama, commentary, new technology (for 1994) and a good soundtrack rolled into one.
I still can't enjoy butter.
Finally someone nailed that one! I would add another Brando film, Apocalypse Now.
those weren't really movies anyway, just "documentaries"...or so they were so called.
Some of these people are messed up in the head.....Putting the Patriot and Braveheart on the overrrated list?
The Matrix was pretty sweet the first time through, but the 20-minute fight scenes with the endless guys in suits frankly got old.
I watched A Christmas Story the other night and my bride-to-be didn't like it. That was about it.
I was appalled. :)
I have met a few women in my life who said they hated A Christmas Story...mind you this was not even in the Christmas season as it was being said. I knew immediately I would not have anything in common with them and I was right 100% of the time.
Good luck to you and your bride to be. Maybe she will be a Christmas Vacation kinda woman.
Well, we agree on most things of importance.
Our taste in movies definitely differs, but thank goodness we both like crime tv shows and 24.
Christmas Vacation is great as well, though I don't think she has seen it, so we will have to try that one on as well.
ROTFLOL!!!!! Never saw that movie.
A movie worth seeing. :)
Sling Blade was terrible.
