A woman staying at a northeast Georgia motel this week shot herself while trying to light a cigarette with a pistol she mistook for a cigarette lighter, police said.
Police said Olivia Hutcherson, 21, of Anderson, S.C., had been arrested for fighting at a Waffle House shortly before she shot herself in the hand with a .22-caliber pistol she had tried to use to light a cigarette.
Lavonia Police Chief Randy Shirley said Hutcherson was staying with two other people at a Best Western motel at about 6 a.m. on Sunday.
When she reached onto a nightstand for what she thought was a lighter, she instead grabbed a pistol owned by Bobby Brown, 56, of Royston, Shirley said.
About 90 minutes earlier, Hutcherson had slapped a man in the face three times after she said he touched her inappropriately, according to police reports.
Five witnesses told police they never saw the man touch her.
"She stated that someone had grabbed her from behind and she turned and struck the first person she saw," an officer wrote in the report.
Starred in such movies as "Dr. Strangelove", "The Mouse That Roared", "The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu", and "The Pink Panther" series, before his death in 1980....
In all honesty, good for you to have no idiot box and watch no movies. I still like my baseball and the news reports however biased.

Bulk quantities of said "lighter" wanted for regional distribution.
Waffle house or Best Western? LOL
The only thing missing from this report are the words "Here, hold my beer". ;)
Retired bud that was NYPD ('50s to 70's) had a shoe box of "mementos" taken from twerps and perps; gravity knives, switch blades, zip guns, etc. One of the more interesting was a Zippo type lighter made into a .22 short shooter, "Hey lemme light that for ya pal..."
And a Britcom class war comedy called "I've Got Mine Jack" if I'm not mistaken.
Unless I'm wrong, the majority of accidental gun deaths in the US are from .22s
Because they're not Rambo type guns, people don't treat them with the respect and caution that any firearm deserves.
The trouble with pipsqueak pistols is not only their low power cartridge, but also a very short barrel, to lower the bullet energy still further. Yes, they too could be lethal, if you hit a windpipe, a carotid artery, or shoot in the eye.
Well. I agree they're primarily defensive type weapons that are designed primarily to give the owner the confidence they need in rough situations, and possibly scare off the attacker. Killing the attacker is a distant third.
.22s are varmint guns. Most thugs are varmints. Makes sense to me!
I am a .22 owner of an AR7 explorer, mostly because of the utility.
But I do have bigger stuff for bigger problems!!
;-)
"This story is just so "southern" it's beyond words....have forwarded to my 'Bama and Georgia relatives."
You know you're a redneck when a smoker asks you for a light and you ask "What caliber?"
