1. I know Phil very well. He is my close buddy and I look out for him.
2. Do not readily assume he sees this as a joke.
3. It is obvious that you are not happy for him. Instead of congratulating him on his new girl friend/big date, you attempt to invalidate him by speaking only of the dog and the dog’s needs, and disguise it as a “joke”.
4. This is a public form, thus a public conversation—open to all.
