The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

GAH!

I'm starting a petition to have Congress declare the creation of spyware and computer viruses to be a captial offense.

I spent 6 hrs. last night an another hour and a half this morning getting rid of a particularly nasty one.

True, I needed to update my antivirus stuff anyway. Of course Norton couldn't fix it.

It appears to be fixed this morning.

But dangit, I had other stuff to do.

Heya - the yogurt turned out great. I added a tablespoon of Stonyfield to the mix. My store-bought culture is very strong and Stonyfield mellows it nicely. The batch turned out *great*. I had some for breakfast this morning. Did you get your Salton maker yet?

I don't know how well you can see the lower half of the wall, but that dark green was "dragged" over a lighter green. I really love the result. The upper color is a lot more brown that it looks in the photo.

So we're thinking about laminate in the little cabin in the woods. What has your experience with the stuff been like?

I think the room looks neat... What's going to happen with the ceiling? What's going in there?

Good morning everyone! ~sip~

Well the stuff we got was insane-o cheap on sale for like 65 cents a square foot. It is pretty flimsy but will serve this job. If I thought it was going to take hard use I would have use something that was not so lowend. Laying it down is EASY. Super megalo not hard. When we got the stuff we did not spring for the 6 dollar bar they recommended for putting the last piece in a row on. After the first row we went back to the the store and got the bar. Between that, and going to a later service on sunday, we did not get the whole room done. Otherwise we could have done it all in one day.

I love the stuff! I would recommend getting a good underlaying padding - we got the mid-grade stuff because it seemed the smoothest, and it works really well. We got the cheapest flooring they had, for various reasons. For the cabin you might want something a little sturdier.

It's going together really nicely. We spent about seven hours on it yesterday, and that includes a trip to the hardware store. Make sure to get the tools they sell to go along with - the tapping block, spacers, and pry bar. We didn't get quite enough spacers and thought we'd use supplies on hand for the others. After two rows we decided to get the real tools and it went much better.

Bottom line: very happy. The laminate is pretty flimsy and is likely to get scratched up, so we've got an area rug for high traffic spots and we're gonna put down pads in the exercise section.

The ceiling basically is done - basically, we boxed in most of the ceiling with drywall but left a rectangular opening in the middle. Then we stained it dark brown and hung some lights. Basically it makes the room feel taller.

~Before~ I found the spyware, we went to the Home and Garden Show yesterday. We like going just to look and dream about what we'd like to do.

It was kinda fun to say "we don't need appliances" "we don't need flooring"...

There's still a lot we do need, but it was encouraging to say "hey, we've already done that," at least a couple of times.

Not yet...it's shipped though, so any day now! I usually just culture my yogurt with plain Dannon whole milk yogurt and I already have some waiting!

I also have some new kefir grains on the way, but in the meantime, I bought some Helios vanilla flavored and am eating it with "Almond Afternoon" granola.

Oh my stars, it's delicious!

I've started having fun going to the Home Despot and saying "Hey, we could do that" or "Hmm, that might be cool." It's a realy eye-opener for me to see what I can do. Like painting a wall, laying a floor, mudding a seam... or even using power tools. (!)

But next is definitely the kitchen. We wants a dishwasher, precious.

Mrs. kept stopping at all the places showing granite counters. I kept telling her we could wait until next year to get their cards...

I want granite counters, too. Or Corian. My counters are so horrible. And the cabinets need to be replaced. But the dishwasher comes first.

And a garbage disposal, maybe.
