The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

The cleaner isn't prescription, just the med is... they should let you buy it. And probably the kitty med too, as long as she's been seen for it, they have always let me continue on sortof chronic meds.

Dang...as is so often the case, Dilbert is *almost* too close to the truth to be funny.

Today's Dilbert:

My real life equivalent began when when some equipment on the roof caught fire, leaving a thin haze of smoke, and the smell of burning electrical equipment, wafting through the whole building. We were all wondering what was going on, when a phone call from the pointy-haired president, and not the pointy-haired boss, said, "This happens every year, and is no big deal. The fire department will be there shortly. Keep working. Anybody who leaves the building will be fired."

I looked out the window, and saw pointy-hair-president issuing his orders from a payphone (this was before cellular) across the street, where he could remain safe, and catch all those disloyal peons who don't like to be ordered to remain inside a burning building.

This was the same company that let a deranged man with a gun into the building, looking to kill his girlfriend, after the armed rent-a-cop buzzed the nut in, and then vanished, never to be seen again.

Last Friday, when the storm started moving in, one of the boss-types came around at four and told everyone to pack up and get home.

I love my job.

My examples are ongoing:

1) Lil' we want you to do this job. The job requires a fair bit of travel. But we're cutting back on travel so you can't go.

2) Lil' we want you to travel across the country and give a briefing on xyz. I ask, "Um, this topic seems like it's better suited for someone more senior. Maybe you should send some of the PhD's." Naw, Lil', you'll do fine. Then today: By the way, we're going to send a couple PhD's with you because you're not senior enough.

It looked as though we were gonna get a pass from the storm. When we checked about 2am, there was no snow. Now we have about 4 inches! Phooey! Oh well, I was just gonna do some painting today, anyway. We decided to paint our kitchen cabinets, and since they're oak, I found out about a primer to use that covers the grain and makes a glass smooth surface (after sanding of course) on which to paint. So I'm gonna play with that today. It's oil-based, so I have to let it dry overnight, but tomorrow, I'll put an acrylic primer on and can put on the first coat of regular paint. I bought three different shades of white so we can compare and decide which goes best with the floor, wall color and new countertop. Such fun!

That just ain't logical. Not logical at all.

Speaking of illogical, I'm looking at the local community college, thinking of taking some classes...and I have no real desire at *all* to take classes that would apply to my job.

I wonder just how plausible it is to totally change careers after age thirty.

And then there's the problem that I don't know what I wanna be when I grow up.

Lemme know, 'cause I'm planning a major shift when I hit 50.

*sigh*

I'm actually serious. Except that I don't know what I'd be good at.

Completely plausible. I did it at age 29. Worked out great!

In my case, though, I'd have to start from scratch. Like I was 18, not like I was 22.

So it's a really scary idea.

On the other hand, if nothing else changes in my life, I don't want to work this kind of job until I'm sixty-five or seventy. And though it could take at least half a decade to switch, that still leaves me with a lot of years left before retirement. Just seems like I'm still too old for that kind of commitment to change, though.

I guess I'm havin' a mid-life crisis of sorts. ;-)

You're only 30, for heaven's sake, that is soooo young!! While you shouldn't live to work, you should be able to enjoy what you do; and if you don't, change careers. If'n I ever went back into the workforce, I should as h3ll wouldn't do what I did before, and I really enjoyed what I did, when I did it. I didn't change, but my profession did....

I know lots of folks who did just that. I took classes with lots of them! The problem is figuring out what you want to do, and then the commitment to doing it.

Plenty of careers you could get with two years at the community college (ok, not going full time it would take longer but they offer summer classes too.)

I forgot about the Oscars until about midnight. Went on the 'Live' thread and cruised through the posts to find out who won the various categories, so that's all I wanted to know, anyway. The only movie I've seen that was even nominated for any awards was Little Miss Sunshine, and I enjoyed that one immensely! We have several of them on our Netflix list, so we'll get through them over the next few weeks.

Go for it! For all the reasons you stated and for the chance to go out and meet more people. You never know what you might find. Jen is right, there are lots of jobs that only need a 2 year degree. And many dovetail into ones that could use a 4 year degree. There is really no down side. Other than time spent on it, and you have that so go for it.
