Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

In our shop... We call that "consultative support" as in you are a subject matter expert sharing your expertise and building a good relationship with the customer. I'm supposed to do it - only I'm not allowed. *long story*

ROTFL!! Yeah, SirKit was told he was pretty snippy by some of the folks with whom he dealt near the end of his job. He'd gotten tired of dealing with folks who weren't even bothering, just putting in time, and he wasn't interested in playing nice anymore.

Well, the place I work (Rose would call 'em the "Lazy E") isn't that bad really. It's just that their policy is to block posts to message boards and forums, which makes sense from a business aspect... they don't want employees posting any "insider knowledge", knowingly or accidentally.
To: RosieCotton
It really isn't, Rosie. One thing they can't outsource to India is on-site repair. And personal, hand-holding customer support is easier in person. I know you're great at your job and I bet this is just first-of-year "let's make everything shiny" pressure.
That said, if you're worried about them thinking you're not experience enough, why not look around at evening certification classes you could take and ask them to pay for you to go? Even if they say no, it makes them see you're working to stay current, and if they say yes, hey, free upgrade.

And personal, hand-holding customer support is easier in person. And with a native English speaker. :\

What I don't have experience with is our own software. Which is mostly written in Lotus script I'm not a programmer. I don't really want to be one. But considering no one seems able to explain anything to me without going to that level, I just feel like I'm absolutely and utterly brainless.
I am testing for some certs this year, but considering they're hardly used in my job, it seems kinda pointless.
And I can't find my #@%* bank card and such, so I guess I'm going nowhere tonight.
To: RosieCotton
Well... I haven't done anything with Lotus script but you know, scripting languages in general aren't that hard. They don't have too many freaky weird concepts. You could absolutely pick up the basics on your own. Is there an O'Reilly book for Lotus script? They are the best I've found.
Programmers don't want ordinary folks to know how easy a lot of our stuff is :-)

The worst of our stuff is that it's many, many generations of code piled on code, with stuff written on the fly when something doesn't work as it should. So when something goes wrong...it's usually because someone tinkered with the stuff and everything collapsed. And I can't troubleshoot what I don't understand. So I just get in the way.

I've been addicted to google Earth lately (I soooo love cheap entertainment) which is a great perspective-builder. As terrible as I think I have it, it could be seriesly worse. I could live in a thatch hut in Angola and trudge down to the river every day with a jar on my head, or a hovel in Libya or pretty much anywhere in the Islamic world, or a Yurt in Mongolia.
Though... Yurts are really cool.
Point is, life in the U.S. is good. Durn good. In spite of it all.

Even in spite of molding walls and dripping roofs. *sigh*
Just everything has been getting me down lately. I guess part of it is knowing that we're going to that wedding later this week, and knowing that I've never *ever* lived up to many folks' standards. And most of the time, I don't care. But I really am not looking forward to this.
To: RosieCotton
Have you done any programming at all? I doubt you'd get a Lotus course at a local community college but apparently it's close enough to Visual Basic that an introductory class in that might help. You still won't be able to fix the 'patches piled on patches' - those ought to be rewritten by an expert - but you might feel more comfortable.

just d@mn, bro
To: JenB
I've never programmed, beyond little word games in Basic, wayyyy back in the day. I told them that up front when I was hired. Maybe they have a different idea of "non-programmer" than I do.I dunno if there are Visual Basic classes nearby...but maybe I'll look into it.

There's plenty of chatting going on, it's just that it appears it's all secret :~)
To: RosieCotton
It doesn't hurt, even just for keeping your brain active. You don't have to retrain as a programmer! But a little VB, maybe a scripting class - ASP or Perl - would really compliment your other great skills.
If you're really interested there's probably a set of classes starting in the next week or so.... the community colleges of this country are an amazing resource that people often overlook.

I hate to whine out loud...
Or something.
Ungh. Still haven't made up my mind whether to crash the home of the NordicTrack gal or not.

And then he tattles to Gandalf about men being weak n' that.
To: Corin Stormhands
*snork* Thanks for that. I laughed.
Shame my boss missed it.

Funny thing for me is that...
as much as I hate Fangorn and the associated circumstances, my job has worked into being almost ~okay~. I've got good relationships with my co-workers and even with Rasputin. I don't want to do this for another 20 years. But for now at least, it's stable. So, there's that.
(I included Hair in the ping 'cause I think she felt left out)
