The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Maybe it's just a West Coast perception thing.

It's cause everybody moved into the West and disrupted the space/time continuum.

I still kinda scoped it out through the window, and it does look like they have some good lightweight frames, so it wasn't a wasted trip. And now I know how to get there...I think...

Oops...

So, basically, yer sayin' it's my fault?

Hrm...I'm toying with the idea of joining a gym. Not a New Year's resolution thing, really...just an it's-been-raining-for-two-months-and-it's-dark-at-night thing.

YMCA isn't just for guys is it? They appear to be a LOT cheaper than anyone else...and there's one vey close by.

Check the local community college circulars. Some of them offer exercise classes and such for very reasonable rates. The karate we take is through the local CC, technically, though it meets in an elementary school cafeteria. It's $40 per eight week session with two classes a week which is a steal. And it's a lot of fun. The CC offers things like dance, kickboxing, and tai bo for the same general price range. It might be more fun than a gym, especially once the weather gets nice.

The YMCA here has a terrific workout space. They usually have a good pool as well, and have open swim times. I took Hydrobics (water areobics) at our local Y, and it was a good workout and a lot of fun. The membership for a single person isn't too horrible, because you can basically go anytime the place is open.

Is there a YMCA close to you?

I don't wanna commit to a class - especially since most are during work or *just* after. I don't like being locked in like that. Or looking stupid in front of a whole group.

I just want access to good machines, and paying a bit means I'm committed to actually using 'em.

In the AF, I went four or five days a week, both for cardio and weights, so I know I can do it again.

The nearest YMCA is about five miles away, I think - I go by it on my way to church. It's brand new - maybe a year or so old, if I remember right.

A full membership costs $43 a month without discounts, which also gets you into a lot of the classes if I ever wanted to do that. I'm not used to paying for a gym (last time I went regularly, I was in the military and got in free), but most gyms look to be a LOT more. And I guess it'd take me a long time to buy even one really good machine at that a month. They may do discounts if you commit to several months at a time, too, I dunno.

Doesn't look like the local community college has much anyhow. Tai chi, and yoga for "full-figured women", and that's about it.

Heh...Evergreen apparently allows community members to use their gym for a fee, but that would just be scary. Vey scary.

Yah, scary. That, and the fee has to be paid in Doobies.

LOL!

And there's that.

Cardio activities include playing chicken with a bulldozer...

If it's new, it should have some really good equipment. When we joined here, we each had an Introductory Session with someone in the Fitness Center who showed us how to use all the equipment. We were even able to each keep a chart in their files in the Fitness Room so we could keep up with our progress on the machines.

Do check it out! If it's that close, you could go in early before work, or on your way home. If it's like ours, they have nice locker rooms with showers.

YMCA isn't just for guys is it?

These days the YMCA is as exclusively "Men" as it is exclusively "Christian."

They really are in most places more of a community center kind of thing. $43 a month is ~pretty good~ for a single membership.

Unfortunately, too true about the Christian part!

Evergreen is slightly less...but like I said, I don't need that kinda interesting. ;-) Plus the hours stink.

Well...I'll hold off until I get back from the wedding. But I need something. And it's cheaper than therapy...
