The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Oh, yeah? Well, I'm rewriting code to be more efficient. Hah. Or something.

Hmm, abrupt all employee meeting in fifteen minutes. Probably about this federal approval thing that just became official.

Did you start some laundry for me? We need to fold stuff. All my shirts have vanished and I need a week's worth to pack

...I downloaded "Raiders of the Lost Ark" ringtone. I plan on hanging it in the tree, then when he gets up going discreetly in the kitchen and calling his number.

I'm wondering if maybe I'll get told I can leave an hour or two early and still put 'em on my time card. That'd be nice. We'll see!

It's kind of frustrating right now as a lot of the things I'm working on depend on other people...and it's not like many are around this week and next!

She'd gotten into drugs and in and out of rehab and it sounds like her parents were just waiting for something like that to happen.

Even so, that's something for which a parent is NEVER prepared. So sad.

In nice news, someone a cube or three down is playing Peanuts Christmas music.

Best. Christmas. Album. Ever.

Hah, our brief company meeting was a conference call congratulating us on getting federal approval on something, and then the boss saying "Everyone go home". So I'm home.

I'm curious how Byzantines do Christmas liturgy. Should be nice.

Let us know! Would this be the vigil or the Midnight Mass? I'd think Midnight would be sung as a High Mass, and would be outstanding. Not sure about the vigil.

David and I went to a concert last night to hear Boston Camerata, a group that specializes in singing "Early Music". After the intermission, and before they started singing the second half of the concert, the director talked about the period instruments that were being played. They had a vielle, the Medieval precursor to the violin. The director said that at the time the violin was introduced, it had such a much sharper sound than the vielle, that it was considered almost vulgar, laughing about how attitudes have changed over the years, so now the violin is considered highbrow. They also had a viola da gamba, which looked like an early cello. Both instruments made gorgeous mellow sounds. One man was playing a sackbut, which I'd heard about, but never seen. It's like a slide trumpet, and I guess is what evolved into the trombone. It had a very rich sound like an English Horn, though, not brassy. He and the man who was the countertenor for the group also played the trumpet, which was the old 'herald' type instrument. The countertenor also played a VEY old cornet, which looked like an oboe that was curved at it went down through the bell end; strange looking, but again a gorgeous sound. The director of the group, Joel Cohen, played a lute, too. It was the first time I'd ever seen one in person, and the sound was just lovely. All of the instruments really blended well with the human voice, so they accompanied the singers wonderfully.

This was their French program. They'd done a program of Mediterranean music earlier in the season, but I really wanted to hear this one of Christmas music. They only sang two songs that are one the CD's of the group that I already have, so it was nice hearing lots of new material.
